Fucking lol, Disney.

It sounds like this movie only exists so that Disney can say that no, Kelly Marie Tran's career is not dead.

This is what the dragon looks like, apparently.
Is that the official design? Are they that desperate to get the Frozen crowd?
I wish Disney would go back to making 2D movies. Also Pixar is fucked without Lasseter.

Me too. I miss 2D animation. There was more soul to it. I'm not saying that 3D isn't a lot of hard work, or that the animators don't care about what they're doing, but there's just something about 2D animation that allows for escapism much better.

There's something off about the story.

The premise from the articles is monsters killed people long ago and dragons fought to the death to kill them all. Fast forward to now, the monsters are back and a dragon is needed to fend them off again.

The trailer showed a different story: A bunch of ambiguously Asian tribes are mad at each other and a dragon is the key to peace.

So if there's monsters killing everyone, why the fuck are the tribes fighting? All Raya did was fight humans and not monsters in the trailer so it's like they don't exist. Were they written out?

You're on to something.
According to this article, the orignal actress for Raya was going to be Cassie Steele (VA example: Tammy from Rick and Morty) but she was replaced with Kelly Marie Tran (VA example: Dawn from The Croods)
There was a key change to Raya's character. The original [voice actress], of course she's wonderful, and she was a perfect fit for Raya's character then, and then the character changed a lot, and so it was necessary to shift voice. and Kelly just embodies Raya. The character shifted and then it shifted even more, as that work together starts to happen between the voice and the writer, the animators and it takes on a whole different life. It's just one of those creative change moments.

Listen, I roll my eyes a wee bit whenever I hear people complaining about Disney samefacing (it holds some water but I don't think it's nearly as bad as what some say) but this dragon genuinely looks like Elsa, what the actual fuck.

Última edición:
They shouldn't have gone for Kelly Marie Tran to voice Raya. Love her to bits, but she cannot voice act to save her life. You know when you watch something animated and a character opens their mouth all you can hear is a voice actor reading their lines off a script? Because that's how her delivery is. Some actors can make the transition from live action to voice acting very smoothly, and poor Kelly clearly isn't one of those lucky souls.

Awkwafina as Sisu also suffers from this to a far lesser extent, because while it doesn't feel like she's reading off a script, her voice is too distinct and the way she speaks is way too modern. It ends up taking me out of the scene, if Sisu's weird Disney Princess My Little Pony-looking face hadn't already.

I find it funny that Sisu talking takes me out though, because I fucking love Mushu and the Genie despite them also having very distinct voices and talking very anachronistically. I wonder why that is.
