There's nothing wrong with a diverse cast in entertainment and moving past tropes, but no one wants to be the token minority. Don't add a useless character just to look progressive. It's more offensive than killing them off to motivate the mc imo. That character would just be playing a stereotype or standing in the background as the comic relief.

It would also be demeaning to the actors playing said roles, I would imagine. They would know that they weren't chosen for their talent but for whatever social justics boxes they ticked.

The other problem is that you have to portray the character the way they want it. If the character is too flawed, bad stuff happens to them (that isn't death), they don't get enough screen time, they "act or sound too white", the character isn't oppressed enough, they have different opinions, etc. The sad thing is these people are extremely difficult to please that it takes the fun out of making a diverse cast.
