There will be people where this is the case, but I am positive the majority of the they/them girlies a.) want to be part of a cool group (LGBT) and be able to call themselves 'queer', which is the current cool thing that makes you totes special and different than a normie (less about attention, more about differentiating yourself from others), or b) don't relate to feminine activities like makeup and pretty dresses and therefore feel like they don't belong, so this is a statement of distancing themselves from stereotypical female behavior, without having to fully commit to the trans pipeline.

A trend is an intense, short-lived fashion, interest, or activity that becomes highly popular very quickly and fades away just as fast. People on the internet wanting to be queer has been going on for over 10 years now. I feel like nowadays, queer has evolved into this alternative life style. Hell, I've seen people claim that a heterosexual relationship can be queer if you and your spouse dont have a traditional relationship. (Wife works whereas the husband is a stay at home dad) I mean sure there's probably a few kids who joined in on being queer when they were teenagers but grew out of it, but I feel like the internet to this day is really trying to convince a lot of these kids that being queer is this cool alternate lifestyle where you dont have to be a "boring" cis-straight person. I see it quite a bit still where these young people only ship gay or trans ships in fandoms and god forbid you like a straight ship.

I really hate this not because its a bunch kids latching on to a label but how the trans community gets angry at you if you insist that some of these young people are clearly not people actually suffering from gender dysphoria or even believe they're trans. I've seen a few times these kids just change their pronouns to she/they but do nothing in terms of transitioning and its like "Why do handmaidens believe she's not lying when its so obvious that this person clearly doesn't believe that they're trans , and is just latching onto a label because she thinks if she doesn't 100% follow the stereotypes associated with her sex that she's not 100% a girl"? Its so obvious that people like that will drop the she/they pronouns and just grow out of an obvious stage shes going through, and yet TRAs never even call these people out even when they know the person never believed they were trans.

We can surely agree that the word "queer" has continuously been moved from actual gay people over the last 20 years to genderspecial/trans to actually not at all special anymore and just normal people who want to feel like they're special. Since the person telling the story was pro-trans, it was just a way for me to confirm what I already knew without raising suspicion that I was implying anything unsavory about troons.
