Granted, it's a fairly simple trick, but to pull off so many transitions so seamlessly is only dwarved by the sheer creativity and wit of the scenes and the scenechanges.

At first, yes. Notice when he gets up on that stage, there is a cut, after that, it is a film projection. They filmed every scene independently, but made sure that the camera angles, the position of (I assume) Buster Keaton and his poses would match up. When they play the scenes in sequence, it looks like the scene transitions and the guy stays.
It is a comparatively primitive trick, but to pull it off so smoothly with the technology of the time, well that's just amazing. They needed a very keen eye for details and the imagination to come up with the individual scenes and how that all progresses, well that's just art.
