I don't think the solution is for the government to regulate which religions are considered fundamentalist and ban them for infringing on people's freedoms. To be honest, I have no idea what the solution is.

Ironically, the solution is the one we already have.
We have therapists that help with cults for people who may want to leave. I may suggest making them as openly available as the sex trafficking posters in public bathrooms, but the freedom to have a personal religion will always come with the cost of stupid or naive people. Going too far in either is a bad idea. We saw what the USSR did to rid religion and that only made stronger cults. Cults THRIVE on persecution, so the best thing to do is make them feel as welcome as possible so it defys their belief.
Almost every cult commits some form of crime as well. From money laundering, to child sex trafficking, slavery, or scams. The ideal method to weed them out is to watch and wait for the heads to fuck up and get caught, because they will.

I've been wanting to share this information further, but I wasn't sure if this was the right place or not. I would say the members of the Assemblies of God fall under the broad quiverfull type umbrella; unfortunately, a close acquaintance is a pastor with them, a community leader, and definitely has more kids than they can mentally or financially handle, as the church insists upon the quiverfull type lifestyle while refusing to offer support in turn for their dedication and services (missions, leadership, donations, etc). They've lived in grinding poverty for years, following the churches orders.

This pastor knew the current face of villainy in this group personally as kids, Daniel Savala of Chi Alpha leadership, which is horrifying, as young boys and men have been his target victims for decades. Thankfully they managed to keep distance between themselves and Daniel, but many of their peers did not.

Optimistically, and sadly naively, this pastor truly believed the church itself wasn't an evil entity, but the actions and inactions taken by the church leaders in light of accusations and evidence, as well as their vicious response to the pastor whistleblowing and trying to develop safe spaces for victims of Daniel Savala within the church community, have shown him the darker truth about this cult and their priorities. The Assemblies of God has been hiding and protecting people like Daniel Savala within their organization for years; they used to refer to him as 'the holiest man alive', and he was their big attraction for recruitment to the church and ministries.

I've also spoken previously with the somewhat unhinged character running the victim's community message boards, where people have been coming together to support each other, compile timelines and evidence, and take Daniel Savala and the church in general down, at least as much as they can. It's a pretty powerful church, and they are quick to sever any connections they deem a liability, regardless of proof of past and current loyalty.

I am surprised it's not more well known, but I am thinking now that I am not the person or in the right spot to really dive into this. Maybe someone else will find it interesting and know what to do with it.

Thanks for the heads up. It took a lot of time to post it, I think you're right and I should minimize personal exposure. I'm probably too close to the situation to present it purely factually. The info can be found with just the small details I've provided, so I'm sure if someone really wants to know, they can Google it. Soz!

I'm not saying you shouldn't post about it, just remove the specific details about your own connections to the cult (not going to say what they are because that would defeat the purpose of you removing them). There's nothing to be sorry for! I just want you and yours to be safe from people with bad intentions. If you think people here should know about them but feel like making a post is too much given your experiences, someone here could probably do it for you. I might look into it myself later and run what I find by you so you can add or change stuff.

Do they take "Be fruitful and multiply" to the extreme? I've been roped into one of their masses and the homily was about the pastor being repeatedly friendzoned by his now wife and it made me cringe.

I'd say so, from what I understand, they encourage having as many children as physically possible before traumatic death. They consider children to be a 'divine blessing and heritage from God himself '. They enjoy speaking in tongues too, from what I've seen. I always find that interesting to observe.

I will be back with links, but Josh got xferred to a state medical facility Friday (the same one as Tiger King I guess?) and the rumor is he's being moved to medium security in CO this week. Because he keeps bringing in phones/contraband they can't house him any longer in min security, I guess? Dunno.
