Question for Americans. - Gunowners preferred.

So I was going through performances of Blue Danube on spotify, and found this album:

And the first few tracks have these extremely loud explosions sounds, they don't sound like drums, but don't sound far away enough to be cannons either, The Orchestra performing this is from Ohio too, so I just want to see if any american here can try and find out what these explosions are, maybe even what firearm is being used. Here is a sample from "Banditen Gallop, Op.378" which has all three of the different explosion effects I heard in the album:

(I'm not a music guy, I just listen to some songs I like, so please forgive me if this is all just hyper loud drums or something and not actually explosion sounds.)

Sounds like a percussion pistol, which are sometimes used in orchestras for things like this.

Perhaps to emulate the sounds of muskets being fired? But they definitely don't sound like cannons like in Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture

That sounds like multiple percussive instruments being struck in unison to produce the effect. I used to get similar/identical from layering drum samples.
