Quake Thread - For fans of Quake 1 and beyond

Any of you heard of the quake VR mod? There was a version of it, or perhaps it was the only version, produced for mobile VR when that was a big thing. It's not bad if you can find an apk for it now. There was only one other person online when I tried it though.

The most impressive thing to me about this one is it worked straight up with the motion controls of the gear VR controller, though it was limited in key binding.

Man, gaming sounded like an adventure back in the day just to set it up.

You will never know the pain of being a gamer until you have experienced the MS-DOS era of gaming.

Windows 95 probably saved many people, myself included, from committing suicide.

You literally had to run in-game tests to see if your hardware was configured properly. That's just soundcards. You also had to make sure your joystick, if any, was properly configured, (this was the era of things like Jane's US Navy Fighters and fucking TIE Fighter and Wing Commander so you better fucking have one) and if not you had to completely exit the game, fuck around with settings, and then reboot to test.

I don't know if I'll get dogpiled for saying this, but Quake 4 is unironically my second favorite in the series after the original, and I really think it needs more appreciation.

While it's first third is rather generic and slow, the game picks up immensely after its most infamous scene, and it doesn't let up afterwards.

My favorite Q2 mods were Action Quake 2 and Weapons Factory. The latter being like "what if we made Team Fortress but just added shit we thought was cool and didn't even bother to balance it at all?" and so it was fun as hell.

There was a really cool assymetrical multiplayer horror mod for Quake 1. It took place in a house, one player was the monster and the players were hunting it. It was using standard models so that meant the monster was a shambler. What made all of this special was that there were mouse holes and paths in the walls and the killer could become tiny(and very vulnerable iirc) at the press of a button. This let him sneak around between rooms and stalk the players before exploding back to normal size and attacking them. It could be pretty unsettling.

Another cool mod was Navy Quake, the ancient forefather of Counter-Strike. It was basically a weapon mod that replaced the weapons with real weapons and everything was hitscan, it might have been singleplayer only because I can't recall ever playing it online.

There was also a multiplayer mod with locational damage and dismemberment where missing limbs affected how you played.

Two large mods was Future vs. Fantasy and Team Fortress, one of those is largely forgotten. Most people also forgot Valve's protracted development of TF2 for Half-Life 1. Team Fortress Classic was just there as a stopgap measure.

I liked IV's singleplayer, with some exceptions, more than II's. The environment details and how the game flipped a switch on what you can interact with after the "change" are very reminiscent of Doom 3.

I mean, its almost like its the same engine made by the same company or something...

Edit: In retrospect, the Doom 3 engine was surprisingly under utilized. I recall it was used in Doom 3, Quake 4 and Prey (the original). I cant recall any other major game that used it. Which is a bummer, it was a good engine all things considered.

I know no one will believe me but my dad actually recorded NIN in the studio doing some of the Quake soundtrack. He said they were drunk as fuck and trashed the studio.

Quake 1 is still one the best FPS games I've played, but just for its singleplayer. Unreal Tournament always satisfied my multiplayer needs.
I don't want a reboot of Quake like DOOM 2016. Nothing against DOOM 2016, I'd just really like a modern quake to play a bit more like a normal game and not like some ADHD nightmare.

The ADHD Nightmare is Eternal. Doom 2016 was perfectly fine the way it was and I wouldn't mind a new Quake game that goes back to it's Roots to be Honest.

Seconding this, Arcane Dimensions was absolutely fantastic. It's unfortunate it's not on the kex engine remake, it would have been fantastic for people to just play that with a few clicks.

The absolute worst thing about the Quake series was id's fucking stupid and tragically lazy decision to name their later games Quake 2 and 3. Even if it never had a proper sequel Quake 1's overall design and world should have been its own separate thing. If you're an old timer and someone is talking about "Quake" the next inevitable and pain in the ass question will always be, "Well, which one?" because none are remotely similar.

I doubt Arcane Dimensions will ever get added to the remaster, the maps are so big and detailed that they had to make a fork of Quakespasm just to run it, also it uses assets from other games, mainly Hexen 2, the same thing happened with the Doom WADs added to the most recent port of it, the authors were requested to remove or change any copyrighted material from their mods before they got added.

idTech5 was a bit too late and the kind of stencil shadows it was using was a drain on CPU resources. It didn't scale well when increasing the number of lights. A deferred renderer and cascaded shadow maps(the chunky pixelated shadows we all know and love from that time) could be done relatively cheaply on the GPU and it scaled nicely. Cascaded shadow maps was the more elegant solution.

That was actually some german raytracing sperg(Andreas something?) that Intel brought on board for Larabee tech demos. During the time they also bought graphics wizard Sam Mcgrath for similar reasons.

The fucked up thing is that, if Quake Champions is canon, it means that the Ranger was left to rot on that eldrich dimension for around 20 years.

That is pretty depressing and kind of badass he was able to keep himself alive (and sufficiently "sane") all this time.

I would say a Quake reboot should take advantage of that but we kind of had that sort of setup already with Doom 64 being made canon by Doom Eternal

I agree, Quake 2/4 should have been their own IPs. Quake had a reason in universe to be called that, it was the name of the threat. Quake 2/4 dont really have a reason to be called that.

Thats why I say "true" Quake will always be the dimensional eldrich atmosphere and theme.

Imagine what a modern proper Quake game could do with modern tech, how the stages could shift and turn on our very eyes, making us question our own perceptions.

One thing Quake always lacked in comparison to Doom was memorable bosses.

Doom had the Barons of Hell, the Cyber Demon and Spider Mastermind. All memorable in their own way.

Quake only had a weird fire monster for Ep 1 and then thats it (unless you count the Vores, which I dont). It kind of hurt the recognizability of Quake 1 in my eyes

But Quake always had amazing sound design. That grenade bouncing sound never leaves your head and gives you almost an ASMR type satisfaction to hear it.
