RU Putin willing to accept US security guarantees, says Ukraine - It could signal the biggest breakthrough in ceasefire negotiations since the Russian invasion of 2022

Russia has said it would accept proposals for Ukraine’s postwar security guarantees, according to President Zelensky’s chief of staff.

Kyrylo Budanov said in an interview aired on Ukrainian television: “At the last talks, the Russian side said, for example, that they would accept the security guarantees offered to Ukraine by the United States.”

The agreement has not yet been confirmed by the Kremlin, but it could signal the biggest breakthrough in ceasefire negotiations since the start of the full-scale invasion four years ago.

It is unclear what those security guarantees would look like exactly, but last month Zelensky said it could include a standing army of 800,000 Ukrainian soldiers, backed by weapons and training from western allies.

The UK-led “coalition of the willing” has also pledged a peacekeeping force, including at least 5,000 soldiers each from the UK and France.

Several rounds of talks have taken place in Abu Dhabi and Geneva over the past months, with seemingly little substantive progress. Earlier in February, negotiations in Switzerland were reportedly “very tense” and lasted more than six hours in different bilateral and trilateral formats.

Budanov added that, at present, Russia had not agreed to a summit between Zelensky and President Putin. The proposed meeting had been suggested as a possibility by the US special envoy, Steve Witkoff.

In previous talks, Russia continued its demands that Ukraine give up the remaining 20 per cent of the eastern region of Donetsk that Moscow has failed to capture. Kyiv has repeatedly refused to do so, instead offering to enact a demilitarised zone, where both sides retreat from the front line, in exchange for security guarantees.

Despite negotiations, both sides have continued their almost nightly exchange of drones and missiles. Hours before talks resumed on Thursday, Russia launched around 420 drones and almost 40 missiles in six different regions of Ukraine, injuring dozens of people.

Western military officials believe that at least two-thirds of Ukraine’s energy production capacity has been destroyed, damaged or occupied by Russia since the Autumn.

But American and European sanctions have continued to hamper Russia’s ability to fund its war. Although domestic wartime industries are ramping up in Russia, particularly in the production of drones and ballistic missiles, its energy industry has been in decline. Russia’s energy revenues last year fell by about a fifth compared with 2024.

Earlier this year, Lukoil, one of the country’s two biggest energy companies, began a large overseas asset sale at a significant discount as a result of sanctions levied by the Trump administration. European Union sanctions on fuel imports and combined efforts to target Russia’s shadow fleet tankers also led to a 25 per cent drop in Russia’s oil and gas exports last year, according to Russia’s finance ministry.

This month, the European parliament approved a new €90 billion (£80 billion) loan for Ukraine, €60 billion of which is earmarked for military procurement.

I believe it when I see it.
Russia will stand on demanding their territorial claims though.
They have lost far too much to walk away with less and Ukraine is starting to get into manpower problems.

In the span of a few months we have seen 4 different instances of Russia mistreating and not helping out any of their allies in times of need. They sat back and let Bashar get ousted, they sat back and let Maduro get fucking kidnapped, they sat back and did absolutely nothing when Khamenei was getting his shit kicked in, and right now they are completely apathetic to the druzhba/JANAF/MOL situation and doing nothing to help out their muttgarian allies.

Where do you people get this idea that being Russia's ally in any way is a good idea? They have demonstrated themselves to be genuine nigger tier neighbors to everyone around them AND they put 0 effort into helping out any their "allies". No fucking wonder most of the eastern block has willingly joined NATO and the absolute circus that is the EU. At least the EU throws some shekels your way if you grovel hard enough. Russia didn't even bother sending a few military helicopters that they promised to Iran because most of them were sent to the WW1 larp session Ukraine war.

This isn't even anything new. During soviet times the russians kept hoarding all of the good stuff (tech, steel, ammo, materials) while their "allies", the eastern block got all the crappy, low grade steel/tech/materials/whatever. A great example of this are the AK bayonets. It's genuinely baffling to me why ANYBODY would want to have these guys as your ally.
what are you even disagreeing with?
Russian Invasion of Ukraine ironically did more to revitalize NATO than anything else - the alliance was nearly at its death's door with Europe not treating Russia as a threat for nearly two decades, instead considering Russia to be just a natural gas delivery serevice. The last time eastern countries joined NATO was year 2004, and now we got Sweden and Finland joining NATO right next to Russia's border because the European leaders shat their pants in fear when the war started.
Europe is weak as fuck no one is threatened by NATO without the USA. No one respects Europe.

Ukraine's unwillingness to accept territorial loss and Europe's investment in the conflict is why this war hasn't ended.
Why would Ukraine give away territory and give away Ukranian citizens to a brutal invader? Especially an invader too weak to actually seize it by force? Why would they?

According to your own logic, Europe's support is why Russia can't end the war? So which is it? You are contradicting yourself.

To not lose more men, infrastructure, materials? This is not a real question.

Europe's support by itself? No. NATO is mostly American expenditure. That's the reality. We can do a whole thing about it but its boring, its been done a million times for four years.

If Europeans are upset, its not my problem. Europe is extremely weak. If they were strong they would fight Russia, in Ukraine. But they will only commit their special forces as trainers and so on.

Russia is losing double digit soldiers for every Ukrainian. So why would Ukraine surrender territory? Russia should pull back to not lose more men, infrastructure, materials etc. Your logic is lacking
Europe's support by itself?
100% of the support Ukraines gets is donated by Europe (including the UK). If Europe is so weak, and Ukraine too, why doesn't Russia just take Donbass by force? Why have they tried and failed for four years?

The reality is that Russia is losing this war. And now the vodkanigger cope begins.

Europe’s money buying US surplus and throwing away their own reserves, nothing else. Their active militaries outside Poland and maybe Greece I guess are incredibly dilapidated paper tigers defunded because ‘well we got the yanks and we need the money for our socialism don’t we?’

Even if true, its enough that Russia has not been able to take Donbass, even as they have thrown away 10000 of tanks and had more than a million casualties, and still failed all of their objectives.

If Ukraine and Europe sucks so much, why can't Ivan just take this little piece of land by force?

No I agree, Russia isn’t as great as we thought, and as someone who has posted that I thought their success was inevitable and that they were more competent than this that has been completely debunked and shown me to be a total sod I admit. That does not equate, however, to Europe being in anyway decent let alone combat ready militarily itself. Yes it was able to send a bunch of hardware to soldiers ready to fight. But it has an incredible lack of people itself willing to become soldiers. And as we have seen it has become too dependent on the US for weapons platforms and to fill in as the deterrent to foreign invasion.

Can it switch it around? I don’t know, Europeans would probably know more than me about that. It has the time though because no way are any vatnik hordes storming the Fulda Gap.

Because Russia can afford those losses, while Ukraine cannot. Even with the lobsided rate.

Eventually? Ukraine runs out of men first as long as Russia is willing to keep feeding theirs into the grinder.

And since Russia is willing to do that? Ukraine ultimately cannot win in the long run so they're going to have to find an off ramp and accept some loss and perhaps be able to dictate what areas they lose before they have no say at all in how much they lose.

Russia isn't efficient or smart or competent about it, but, they have the industrial base, populace, and lack of care about the common soldier to build/conscript and then lose as much as they have to if it eventually claws up a victory. Not what they set out to get, but, enough to have plausible deniability that they lost in the end.

The "Russia out of tanks" videos have been popping up weekly for years, after all. When exactly are they going to run out?

You're just trying to mirror the logic, but you can't seem to understand that Europe is not a country like Russia is, so its not a perfect parallel.
How many times do you want to repeat the same conversation from 2014, 2022, etc.
Russia was not stopped to an attrition war because Ukraine is strong, or because Europe is strong.

"Russia is losing X, Ukraine is only losing Y"
But Ukraine has less population. This is also not about that. It's about what happens after.

Same old story. Russia gains steady territory, Ukraine makes a specific counter attack, like Kupiansk.
What is it, 22 percent of Ukraine territory? And once again, all that expenditure and infrastructure obliterated means that Ukraine is going to be in debt to and repopulated by foreigners.

So the die is already cast. They chose to liquidate their men instead of lose territory and make concessions that guaranteed that Western Europe hegemony would not take over Ukraine, but that was never going to be in the cards. Just like how Russia is the boogeyman because the USSR, and the EU needs a justification for NATO to even exist.

How many times do you want to repeat this conversation with the same answers?

No one ever said it was impossible. I believe the joy of the west was "we don't even have to die to kill russians" or something like that.
I recall a year or so ago when people were demanding that Zelensky surrender and accept whatever deal Trump hands him regardless of territory or sovereignty lost.

This was right after the whole Zelensky refusing to wear a suit in front of Trump fiasco.

Unrelated to your post, but just recently Starlink stopped providing service to the russians on the frontline, who were using it as thier main coms hub. So far they have had quite a few issues (friendly fire, general confusion and chaos, wrong info...) and Ukraine seems to be trying to leverage this to push the frontline back a bit. Allegedly it will take russia months to get the coms back in place and repair their logistics to pre starlink cut levels.

Point I'm making. If the russoids are so fucking stupid and retarded that they are RUNNING their ARMY on civilian grade western commodity services then who's to say there aren't any more glaring security issues like these that ukraine can exploit? I wouldn't be surprised, really. I've seen quite some dumb shit from this whole war.

Basically just like the in star wars movie where the good guy shoots that conveniently placed vent whole and blows up the bad guys evil space ship thing (its been years since I saw a star wars movie). Or like in the marvel movies when the main bad guy is having his villian monologue and then the marvel good guys (TM) hit him with some one-liner and defeat him with the power of friendship because the bad guy didnt account for some loophole in his evil plan, something to that extent.

Russia really isn't that better off than Ukraine in terms of demographics. You can't really hold your declining population hostage and then demand that others bow to your will lest you'll meat cube your population. The fact that this war has gone on for like 4 years proves this. People have been making this exact argument for 4 years now.

But if Russia is so weak, why can't Ukraine just retake their occupied territory by force?
Ukraine would get their asses kicked, if they launched any kind of major offensive. The warfare heavily favors the defenders, and exacts a huge toll on those that send their soldiers forward. If Ukraine could attack on a major scale and win, they would. That's how it is
