My library recently did a big remodel after being closed after a year (then closed off its main entrance within three days because someone ran into a column, then when that was finally fixed COVID happened like a month later), and I just don't find it comfortable anymore, maybe because the old one was around for so long. It was built around 1998 with little changes besides new carpeting, yet something seems "off" about the new one. Mostly the building was just physically expanded and rearranged, with the childrens' section glassed in, but I'm not sold on it.
 
It's been at least 5 years since I've been in a real library. I will say I used to love them everything from motorcycle repair to history of M16 rifles. I love technical books.
 
My library was quite peaceful for a little bit but the nogs have finally realized it's open again so it's nothing but loud-ass black kids playing minecraft and annoying black women who sing to themselves while printing shit out on the computers for "dey" job or whatever the shit it is they do. Unless you get the movies when they're brand new they're all scratched to shit, and the book section is probably 50% black voice propaganda now.

Any major metro area in Canada is like this. No one does anything about the homeless because muh human rights.

I'm getting mad pozzed on tax reform because even though I believe in taxes funding society, I don't want to live in a fucking literal shit hole. I work my entire miserable life and I can't even enjoy civic amenities in my spare time. It's bullshit.
 
Interlibrary loan is pretty nifty, especially when its tied into the university library system. One day, you'll find yourself looking for a book that never been digitized yet and is thus impossible to pirate or purchase, and in that case interlibrary loan will save the day. You just have to be patient with the wait time and fast with your scanner/camera when the book arrives.
 
I used to spend a lot of time at libraries because my mom is a librarian and for whatever reason sometimes she would just take me with her and I'd hang around for her entire shift. This was in the mid 90's where I would play educational games on the computers, roam the employee areas and dig around the dumpsters where they threw out books... it was interesting. Maybe it was location or just a less terrible year, but the 2 libraries I would do this at where always well maintained and not swarming with homeless. Even they where not complete devoid of homeless and crazies coming in now and again, she told me a few stories.

Every now and then when I talk to her I joke about the internet making them obsolete and to some degree it's true because her library is doing a whole ton of non-library stuff. It has a bunch of 3d printers and some kind of tech lab place similar to what a few others have mentioned here in previous posts. The one I find really weird is they have like an e-sports league that just opened up and something about screaming racial slurs while losing at League of Legends just doesn't seem like it should vibe with the tone of a library. I haven't been to it in years, but it is pretty nice.

I'll have to ask her if it's filled with commie gobbledygook now, but hopefully it being Texas that is less likely.
 
I can browse the entire region's libraries' combined selection online, and they'll send any book to the local library (I live a few blocks away from mine) for free. So "my library" effectively has a collection of a few million books, and I can always find what they have (and whether it's available) with a few clicks.

It's very useful. I vastly prefer reading physical books and it saves me from buying everything I have a passing interest in. The only problem is new bestsellers have long queues, but it's not like I'm running out of stuff to read in the meantime.

The physical building I only pop in and out to claim reservations/return books, but I haven't seen many bums or junkies. Mostly just the elderly.
