Prof: SpongeBob perpetuates 'violent, racist' acts against indigenous people

The Contemporary Pacific: A Journal of Island Affairs covers a wide range of disciplines with the aim of providing comprehensive coverage of contemporary developments in the entire Pacific Islands region, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. It features refereed, readable articles that examine social, economic, political, ecological, and cultural topics, along with political reviews, book and media reviews, resource reviews, and a dialogue section with interviews and short essays. Each issue highlights the work of a Pacific Islander artist.
The person responsible for this essay is this woman (it's always a woman, I keep telling you fuckers it's always a goddamned woman.)

The professor complains that "all of the main characters on the show are male," except for Sandy Cheeks the squirrel, whom she suggests was only created in order to boost the gender diversity of the show.
How shit are you as a woman that you think a fucking cartoon squirrel living at the bottom of the goddamned ocean is a signal of your representation being threatened? The kids are watching a talking SPONGE and an autistic STARFISH and you're worried that only girls are going to feel left out?

These days, it's really hard to find fault with Pol Pot rounding up and exterminating the academics

They were so superior to whites that they could sprout gills on demand.
WE WUZ MERMAIDS N SHEIT

Besides being wrong (depending on what you call "main character" there's also Ms. Puff, Pearl and Karen), Sandy is smart (a scientist no less), incredibly strong, independent and whatnot. You know, the things they claim a female character needs to be good representation. Her being "the girl" almost never comes up in the show.

I've said it plenty of times and I will repeat it until I die choking on my own sap: The people bitching about this shit do not consume the media they're bitching about. It ain't exactly surprising to hear they haven't got a clue.

I would love to have that much time on my hands to dedicate to accusing a children's cartoon that's been on the air for 20 years of being problematic.

In this case, wouldn't the humans who possessed the means to move away from bikini atoll be the privileged ones? I mean, the sea creatures were "natives" too, except that they can't just decide to leave, and the implication of the show's title is that all the talking sea life is the result of horrific mutations, right?

All I'm saying is that even if this was a project to intentionally create a far-fetched position to defend as some kind of test of your argumentative skills, she should have failed. Her position is stupid and undermined by its own premise.
