Culture Powerful song written by JCPS students asks for reparations - Young Students dress as slaves for a video demanding reparations

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A popular music video going around shows Jefferson County Public Schools students asking for reparations.

Resource teacher NyRee Clayton-Taylor helped her students create the video. Clayton-Taylor said it all started when her students started asking about reparations, what they were and what it meant for them. Now, students like 4th grader Jeremiah Briscoe know all about what they deserve.

"They was not too young to fight against segregation and at my age I can still fight for justice,” said Briscoe.

Briscoe and 13 other students, dubbed the Real Young Prodigys, took a trip to Alabama over the summer where they visited a number of important spots critical to the civil rights movement.

Jeremiah Briscoe, a 4th grader, is one of the students in Real Young Prodigys, makers of the video.

They spent a few weeks prior writing a rap song based on the history and how it should impact their present.

Parts of their video shoot were filmed at Locust Grove Plantation. The video shows the students dressed as slaves, a decision that has brought out the trolls on social media.

The 14 students in Real Young Prodigys created the music video after a visit to Alabama over the summer where they saw several places on the forefront of the civil right movement.

"I told them from the beginning that the conversation was going to be hard and not everyone was going to like this,” Clayton-Taylor said. “Me, being naïve and lovey-dovey and loving everyone I did not expect for trolls to attack my students and to attack them with stereotypes."

The comments to the YouTube video are abusive and offensive. The young students who saw the comments on YouTube reacted better than most adults would.

"They took up for themselves by explaining themselves with facts and they were not disrespectful,” Clayton-Taylor said.

As for Jeremiah, he can't wait to push the boundaries again, creating change as he takes part in the next Real Young Prodigy’s hit song.

“It was shocking, because all the stuff I couldn’t learn in school, I learned outside of school,” said Briscoe.

I most definitely have zero problems with them learning through fun activities. Just really irks me that they're learning they're being "oppressed" by a white population when they're given a fucking education, likely on tax payer dime, and then nobody even spell checks shit.

Lot of them are going to grow up hating other races because they're taught that they should deserve more than they have, and I don't even fucking know what they think they're not getting; They're on the fucking Internet in front of billions of people, doing what they love and paying nothing in return for that, and they see themselves as victims because their teacher said they are. It's true, most of it seems to stem from a deep tradition of walking this tight rope between individuality and the community at large. Alot of the widely held beliefs are really easy to debate but the major issues in the black community aren't ones people think about intellectually it all comes from feeling (a great example is when Sam Harris got into a debate with Hannibal Buress about police) These widely held beliefs are like glitches in the black community hive mind that cause some weird funky mutations in their minds... I work with alot of black people and a big topic of discussion is race, one thing that seems to be almost universal is that black people have two points of view they are always representing one is their personal view which they usually only share in intimate one on one interactions and than they have their Black Community views which seem to be this peer pressured thing that when two or more black people are in a room together they have to "represent" for their brothers and sisters they almost always agree with eachother in a larger debate but will concede when one on one. As a White guy on the outside looking in, it looks exhausting

I did have to laugh at the part in the video where they rapped about not having shoes so they couldn't pull up their bootstraps. Like, what? Black people spend a shit ton of money on shoes -- especially sneakers.

The whole reparations things is a bad idea.
1) How exactly will we figure out which black people had slaves for ancestors? They kept records of slaves the way they kept records of cattle. Any black person doing research for genealogy finds out pretty quickly that you can't trace ancestry through slave records. So, how can we figure out which blacks deserve reparations vs. those whose families came here after slavery was abolished?
2) Not every white person has ancestors that owned slaves. So, only people who have ancestors who owned slaves should be forced to pay these reparations. And even then, the amount paid should be based upon the number of slaves owned. Someone whose ancestors owned 1 or 2 slaves shouldn't have to pay as much as someone whose ancestors had an entire plantation's worth.
3) If we pay reparations, that's it -- they've received compensation for slavery. The slate is clean and they will find that most white people will say that we don't need to make special allowances for blacks anymore because things are even now. It is also going to piss off poor white people and create more racial tension -- but whatever.

I think we should pay reparations, if and only if, like other settlement agreements we can make them sign a non-disclosure policy. And if they ever talk about slavery again, they forfeit the settlement and have to pay it back with interest.

Sickle Cell Anemia is an entirely genetically inherited condition. It's one of the main trackers of genetic health since it's almost exclusively in black populations.

Inbreeding in the black population has not really had a major study mostly due to how volatile the subject matter is and how large a scope such a study would encompass.

So you have to go by Sickle Cell Anemia and how that's been spread because that's really the only well documented source. If you want to go further you would have to look up stuff on European Muslims there's quite a few documentaries on the effects of multigenerational inbreeding.
