The point is there's maybe one gym where Chikorita is close to a benefit in a generation with notorious Exp issues right after Ecruteak.

Graveler, Ampharos, and Kadabra were on all gen 2 teams for a reason. Outside those pickings started dropping off hard, and more importantly you could get them all right before wild battles got horrifying under leveled.

Does anyone recommend any fangames (maybe romhacks?) that don't follow the traditional Pokémon formula? I've played PokéClicker, Pokémon Tower Defense, PokéFarm Q etc.

this isn't Chikorita-exclusive lol, Chikorita just gets the short end of the stick because it sucks with the gyms. Gen 2 in general has this problem; if you want to add a new team member past Ecruteak you're basically SOL unless you spend 8+ hours grinding on the lowest-level wild pocket monsters you've ever seen.
Emerald Rogue is a good one even if 2.0 is overly difficult for no real reason. I enjoyed the 1.0 versions (even though they really are pretty huge downgrades) and the game itself can be pretty fun in short bursts. Despite the dev being a tranny, he's pretty quiet about it. Literal only time you'd ever know is if you looked hard at his profile picture or went into a secret room in a mostly-irrelevant building.
1.0 has character customization, town-building, meta progression and surprisingly decent balancing,
2.0 has all of this, expanded, as well as challenges/quests that feed into the town-building, rideable Pokémon, following Pokémon, a larger selection of Pokémon, a bunch of new features, and a few completely new routes to traverse alongside 1.0's transplants from mainline games. It also has multiplayer, but due to it involving some shit to do with IP addresses
2.0 really is worth the upgrade even if it's a bit of a pain in the ass. It has difficulty settings (I was playing on Normal) with granular customization if you want to do something like remove all Pokémon of a certain generation or make trainers harder. 1.0 doesn't have this, but it does have two versions: "classic" (which sticks solely to generations 1-3, no gimmicks, old sprites, etc.) which I greatly enjoyed and "EX," which is the recommended version but stuffs in all that NuGen bloat. It's got every gimmick, every mon, DS sprites, etc. Did not like it nearly as much.
Anyways, go give it a shot. I genuinely think it's one of the better unconventional ROM hacks out there and it's a shame that it seems to have been overshadowed by Pokerogue's retarded controversies.
If you want something that vaguely follows the traditional formula but completely (and I do mean completely) overhauls the battling system, I think I'd have to recommend Pokémon Tectonic. It's such a drastic overhaul that it can be a little overwhelming, but I found it interesting enough. Never managed to get too far into it because I quickly lost the time unfortunately. I can't give a very in-depth review as a result, but I'll just say that even the first hour or two is rather surprising and it's quite a challenge to get ahold of all the new features and strategies the battling system opens up to you.
Rocket Red is probably stretching the definition of "non-traditional formula", but you play as a Rocket grunt doing Rocket grunt things and getting promotions so I felt it worth mentioning. Story's a bit edgy but it's a little endearing until like 3/4 of the way through, when it gets so completely fucking insane that you can't help but laugh. Was supposed to get a huge 2.0 update in 2023 that got cancelled/indefinitely postponed because the trannies over at Pokecommunity threw a multi-page fit in 2021 (that got completely deleted, because of course) over a one-off tranny line near the end of the game. This, understandably, pissed the author off enough to remove the download link from Pokecommunity for years and eventually led to him rescinding the revamp for an original game of his that's supposed to act as a spiritual successor.
All that drama aside, give the game a shot if it sounds fun. It was quite a bit of fun, at least to me, so I recommend it wherever I can.
I would probably recommend Pokémon Crown if it had a single download available, but it's been over 3 years and the fucking thing doesn't even have a beta. If you still have hope and want to see what real-time battling in 2D might look like, in a medieval setting, it might be worth keeping an eye on.
I've heard good things about Pokewilds, but from what I understand the dev team is full of retarded incompetent trannies and they haven't done any work on the game for a year and a half now. There was some drama, I think, that I can't remember for the life of me. Nevertheless, it's Pokémon but survival. Try it, I guess.
If you want "Pokémon but survival" except good, I must insert my obligatory Cobblemon shilling section because this fucking mod has stolen hundreds of hours of my life at this point. It's technically just a Minecraft mod that adds Pokémon into an existing game, but the usual formula (gyms e4 champion etc.) is absolutely nowhere to be seen and a lot of the emphasis is just on hanging out with your bros while you build cool shit or go fishing. There are add-ons that add trainers (as well as loads of add-ons in general), and future plans to include gym leaders + regular trainers and such, but none of them are officially implemented into the game yet so if you want to avoid that formula then Cobblemon's your man.
I hope I could be of service. Despite the plethora of ROM hacks out there, basically none of them are interested in doing something new with the formula unless it's for a GameJam. :/

I already said that in the post. The idea is that gen 2 is already hurting bad for EXP thanks to that split s you really don't have the time to baby Chikorita. Not when you can be using Totodile with the busted rage or Cyndaquil that gets actual type coverage (even if that Whitney fight is rough). I'd defend Chikorita if it had a niche but it's a gen late for Razor leaf spam and it's Blastoise with a much worse typing and coverage.

Great video about chinese pokemon games, this is so interesting. They live in a world that was completely different than the reat of the world.
And I could say the same for me. I actually never saw a gameboy in my whole life, nor GBA, nor DS. Let me talk a little bit about pokemon in Brazil:
My first contact with pokemon was the anime and until 2007 I literally never played or even knew about pokemon games until a friend told me that it existed. And I was there in 1999 when it debuted on the TV. I had toys, comics, cards, tazos
I had these two books that were anime comics of the first 12 episodes of the anime and loved to read it.
Curiously at the time, manga as a whole was already being published here but pokemon manga was never published at the time. It all changed a few years ago: in 2014 when they decided to start publishing the manga, except for one detail: it started with Black and White and they have been consistent so far. But let me tell you about the prices and inflation: a single volume of BW in 2014 costed 11,90.
The sequel BW2, published in 2024 started at 39,90. So they started from BW, then they went back to RGB and started it again, currently they are at X&Y
Now to a merchandise, I remember these miniatures that fame inside these pokeball shaped rings in mini bottles of soda
There was also tazos like these
I still remember how I got an articuno one inside package of chips. And of course they also released versions that would evolve depending of the angle.
In 2000 they released a set of new ones with 60 Johto pokemon that added a Joken Pokemon twist to it:
Not only you had the shitters in these cool ass backgrounds, it also had a game when you turned it over, but it wasn't limited just to rock, paper and scissors, now you had more stats. So even the same pokemon could have two variations.
I lost it all as I grew up, but somehow I still have a single one left. This shit is 25 years old. You will never guess which pokemon is it.
Pokemon was always big in Brazil, and recently people were pissed that the new game finally got a latin american localization... Except that Brazil was excluded again. And this isn't something normal at all. The biggest country in South America with the most money got fucking nothing again.
And the fact that game localization is something that people had in other games for more than 10 years already with fully translated games and complete dubs already, but Pokemon doesn't do it is quite bizarre.
Even more when pokémon cards are translated here for decades already, and it isn't like pokemon games need that much effort in translating the text, to leave out such a big market is weird.
But yeah, kids play their pirated version translated by fans and even hacks got full translations when they like it enough.
I personally don't care and for me, video games was one of the best ways to improve a new language (english) and be better with it by just using it rather than waiting for translations, it is a great way to get yourself to practice. But since pokemon is a children's franchise, I can't say it is that valid thought.
There was much more to talk but I wanted to focus on my personal memories.
I can see however how people are guided by nostalgia and me being at the beginning, should be too, but to be honest, it isn't true. I hate kanto games and I really don't give shit about Johto and my favorite era is the gen 3-5.

It's odd that they haven't translated the Pokemon games into Portuguese yet, especially when the anime was translated and the games offer two kinds of Spanish and Chinese.
I don't play fangames myself but I've seen a youtuber talk about a top-down horror shooter. It doesn't seem too good, but it's unique.
But man, I remember Pokemon Tower Defense. I recently tried to play it but getting it all up and running is a bit of a mess. It was a very well-done fangame (except for the catching mechanic, it was shit) but I always hated how Sam was even more anal about timed events than Nintendo, so many Pokemon are no longer available. I played PTD2 when it was still active and you could only get most legendaries and gen 6 mons by being among the first 500 people to type a password on his website. Too slow? Tough luck, no Victini for you. Ever.

Rage cheeses the first three gyms easily.
A slightly overleveled Croconaw with Surf and chesto berry is a guaranteed win against mortys gengar.
Clair is the only leader who is a bit of an issue with Totodile, the others are a cakewalk.
Chikorita Geodude and Zubat have a great synergy against the first four gyms. However it's not a no brainer, you can still get haxxed and wipe. Not even gonna talk about the boring strategy against Falkner, switch PP stalling Pidgeotto out of mud slaps.
Every nuzlocke I did with with Chikorita, it died before reaching it's final stage or underperformed and got replaced with stronger team members, usually magneton, ampharos or even victreebel who has at least good attack + sludge bomb.

Man, watching this just ends up making me sad. BW weren't perfect games but at least they felt like they were trying to accomplish something and have some kind of meaning, as opposed to the current weirdly meanspirited shlop we keep getting stuck with.
Honestly this sounds better than the shit we've been getting. At least it might be interesting. At least it's not fucking Ohmori.

I'm in the same boat tbh, the past few games have been such absolute fumbles that I would rather take a chance on literally anyone else. This guy seems to enjoy indie dev work and has mentioned studying how people play LA to take notes for the sequel, so at least he's someone who seems to actively care about making a good game.

A friend of mine mentioned that the article (specifically the one about Jamboree, WOTC's 14th Pokémon TCG set that ultimately went unreleased, and how WOTC handling of the TCG eventually caused them to lose the license) I posted a while back has a video version so I'll post it here for clarity's sake.
I'm still a bit chuffed about WOTC actually gaming the market on TCG singles via the "Price Codex" they printed in their Duelist and Topdeck magazines and WOTC treating the TCG like a commodity rather than a proper card game, it's eerily similar to the current situation the TCG's experiencing right now with people manipulating the prices of Art Rares and Secret Art Rares via TCGPlayer and TPCi altering the pull rate of the latter card rarity due to investors whinging about how they actually lost value over time.

For the most part no. Cards tend to stay in their original sets unless its base rarity is printed in a special set like Paldean Fates or Prismatic Evolutions and their Full Art/Art Rare/Secret Art Rare/Gold Rare prints tend to stay in their original sets unless there are additional Full Art/Art Rare/Secret Art Rare/Gold Rare prints exclusive to the Japanese version of said special sets.
As far as reprinting them in later regulation blocks is concerned it's rare for that to happen for Trainer cards (except for certain ones like Poké Ball, Professor Oak/Professor's Research, Switch, etc.) and even rarer for one-to-one reprints of Pokémon, if a card from the latter group is reprinted there are usually some form of revision made to it.
