Competitive Pokémon is arguably one of the most autistic things I’ve ever seen, and I play Yugioh so that’s a pretty high bar. Smogon has basically ruined any chance for a lot of Pokémon to be “viable”, and despite there being something like 900 of the fuckers at this point, maybe less than a tenth of the Pokémon pool is ever used.

Makes it hilarious when I see Pokémon Showdown videos of meme builds wrecking face and the salt that comes from it though. If nothing else, playing your favourites over playing whatever Smogon wants to felatiate means against anyone who follows those rules religiously, they’ll generally be baffled and not know what to do…

True. The only thing that made him worse than the original is the lack of the "Guts" ability. So, instead of getting a free turn to double your attack with Protect-Flame orb, you have to run swords dance. Even then, if you play your cards right (and run a chople berry on A-Raticate for good measure), that down side isn't that bad.

While A-Raticate is somewhat weaker and slower than the original, it makes up for it with it's added bulk allowing it to be more reliable for taking hits. Not to mention it has STAB sucker punch, so it's not like you'll really need to it to outspeed alot of things.

While we’re still airing out grievances about Smogonfags worming their standards into an official competitive capacity, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say too many people sleep on the viability Zangoose. Not only is its movepool diverse enough that you have options for coverage with Aerial Ace and punch attacks, but Toxic Boost will allow it to hit like a truck, and if paired with Facade, Zangoose hits like a nuke.

I’ve run Zangoose on a couple UU and RU sets and I struggle to to comprehend why it’s stuck in PU. Sure, its defense isn’t great but a speed-based nature like Jolly or Hasty allows it to keep up with most sweepers. Its fragility mostly stems from the fact that the best sets require a toxic orb and switching is incredibly risky, but the latter is applicable to most non-sashed sweepers anyway.

Zangoose just isn’t fast enough. Base 95 gets outsped by mons like Ninetales and CHARIZARD who are from KANTO, in case you couldn’t tell. Hoenn’s got a lot of well-designed shitmons.

The Smogon mindset definitely contributes to the problem, but I’d place most of the blame on Game Freak themselves. Sure, they try to buff some of the really powercrept Pokémon, but it always seems to fall flat. Even Masquerain getting +40 BST wasn’t enough to save it, and WHERE THE FUCK IS LEDIAN’S BST BUFF HOLY SHIT WHY DO THEY HATE LEDIAN SO MUCH?! At this point, if you look at the VGC usage stats, it feels like Game Freak is trying to make it so that only the Pokémon they shove down your throat all the time are allowed be viable. It’s all legendaries, starters, or Dragapult.

Remember what gen A-Raticate was. It was gen 7 and the gimmick is Z-moves and that what make A-Raticate better than the original.
Yeah regular Raticate is stronger and faster with guts or hustle but A-Raticate get stab with dark moves and combine with hustle and dark type z-move also A-Raticate have Knock Off a move that remove opponent item that what make more desirable than regular Raticate since it can't learn it.

Neg Rate me for saying this - I hope that in Gen 9 (which is probably getting announced next year, hopefully not released so GF actually has time to build something more than a bunch of glorified hallways and a Wild Area) they cut more older Pokémon out of the game, that'd likely get returned via DLC anyway. I know some Pokémon are never going anywhere - obvious examples being Pikachu and Eevee - but fuck me if that doesn't shake things up nothing will.

That and it might make Charizard fuck off for a while, they really need to stop going to the well with him...

Don’t cut Pinsir though, it’s my favorite ever and it needs to be buffed properly now that the Mega is gone.

Megas and Z-Moves were just the beta forms of Gigantamaxing, and even then it's a gimmick that likely won't follow us into Gen 9.

Except Z-moves were arguably a better gimmick in terms of changing up the battle system and the meta a bit in online matches.

Every pokemon had access to a powerful hit once per battle, so players had to decide when would be a good time set it off and hit as hard as they can. Status moves were even given additional effects if used with the Z-Crystals that made for some pretty fun gimmick builds.

Dynamaxing may have let every pokemon have access to it, but Gigantomaxing was implemented along side it pretty much repeating the major issue with Mega evolution.

Well, Brilliant Diamond and Pearl gave us stubby armed characters.

That's not a gimmick and you know it. Besides, BDSP is still Gen 8.

The only question is what's the next incredibly stupid gimmick we're going to get stuck with...

Pokemon Legends' battle styles system looks like a pretty fun gimmick to play with even if it's pretty simple.

Pokemon is a single player RPG for almost the entire fanbase. Having weak early bug pokemon you upgrade into something better once you make it through the early game is part of the balance. Butterfree will carry you with it's better stats than your starter until you get to late game where it falls off and you can get something better. To shake up the meta in any reasonable way they need to ban legendaries from online play or not put them in the game. That's not happening when they some of the most popular money makers in the franchise. Competitive play was supported extremely well with Sw/Sh. Going back to BD/SP's lack of support for easy leveling, Unlimited or easy to find TMs, hyper training and EV training made me appreciate how much Sw/Sh did to improve those aspects. If Gamefreak makes it that easy next time while setting distinct battle modes it would probably get more people into playing online. Add little cup, limited dex events (rotate monthly) and other ways to remove the broken stuff and more people will play. They could go full shill mode and do things like Eeveelutions only for a month. People would have a blast and cosmetic items like an Eevee hat or backpack would get people interested in playing.

Charizard hate is weird. He's called a shillmon but he's not close to as shilled as Rotom is. Rotom went from a cool hidden pokemon to being shoved in your face every single game after. We never got Charizard phone or Charizard bike. Next gen will have Rotom dilation stations so you can switch gender on the fly.

That just sounds making a stink about mario's World 1-1. Pure nostalgia and being the grounding of the franchise gets you a layer of protection, methinks.

What’s weird is that despite all the people complaining about Charizard pandering a lot of those autistic fandom tier lists put it on a high level alongside the other two Kanto starters. Surprisingly the Johto starters except for the Chikorita line are sacred cows. Typhlosion especially gets a lot of love. Though yet again it could be the genwunners/Satoshi Tajiri purists who only love RBY and GSC (and hate their remakes) talking and /vp/ regulars being contrarians.

I feel the current reception towards Charizard is less hate and more people getting burnt out on it. I don’t recall much complaining about pandering in gen 6 but by gen 8 people were tired of it especially since it was overshadowing the other two Kanto starters.

Maybe from the fans, but as Pokemon themselves they never got anything of note. While the Gen I starters got Megas AND Gigantamax forms, the only things they really ever got were Hidden Abilities, but almost everything without Levitate got one. Feraligatr is just a worse Gyarados, and Typlosion has nothing notable whatsoever outside of being the fastest Eruption user, since its shallow special movepool means it can't really use its stats to its fullest(Plus it never really got anything to make up for losing Thunderpunch as a special coverage move in Gen IV)
