A 45-year-old man raped a child weekly for several years, a court has heard. The judge called Nadeen Shahzad, 45, "a persistent and relentless paedophile".
James Wilson, prosecuting, read out a victim impact statement in court. The child said they found it hard to sleep at night, had missed long amounts of school, and constantly suffered with insecurities. They said it affected them every day and had led them to consider committing suicide.
They added: "The last two years waiting for the trial have been gut-wrenching and the anticipation of it was very stressful."
Mr Wilson told the court how the child didn't know what Shahzad was doing and didn't want to tell anyone as they were scared.
Nick Gedge, for Shahzad, told the court how Shahzad didn't accept the findings of the jury. Mr Gedge added that his client was of positive and good character, and had maintained a stable job.
Shahzad, of City Road, Roath, has no previous convictions. He pleaded not guilty to 17 offences against him but was found guilty following a week-long trial at Cardiff Crown Court in June.
Shahzad was convicted of several offences relating to rape of a child.
Judge Lucy Crowther sentenced Shahzad to a total of 30 years in prison with a lead offence of anal rape on multiple occasions.
Judge Crowther also ordered that Shahzad has no contact with children under the age of 16 other than when it's "inadvertent or unavoidable in everyday life". She also said Shahzad was prohibited from living in the same house as any child under the age of 16 unless express approval was given by social services.
Shahzad must be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Judge Crowther added: "Even now you maintain your innocence, you told the report writer there was no evidence against you. There could not have been anymore.
"You are man who's grossly arrogant and you're full of self-importance. You are self-interested and obsessed with your own sexual gratification. You think you're better than anyone else and you're extremely manipulative.
"You have no capacity of understanding or even wanting to understand or try to come to terms with the enormity of your offending. You are a persistent and relentless paedophile."
Detective Sergeant Gravell said: "These are horrific offences against the most vulnerable of victims
"I want to commend the victim for their incredible bravery and the courage they showed in coming forward, sharing what had happened, and supporting the investigation.
"I hope that the outcome at court brings them some comfort that the offender has been brought to justice and that their bravery has helped protect the wider public from harm."
