Just found TIME by Electric Light Orchestra thanks to a Parodius themed remix of Twilight I found a while back from Siivagunner.
I really used to love ELO thanks to my boomer dad's iPod tunes but he never had this.
It's fucking beautiful. Possibly the best thing I've ever heard. Definitely up in that ballpark at least.
Make sure you listen to the remastered version with the originally removed epilogue. Fucking feels all over.

New York Dolls - Self Titled

This was a glam rock album, but it essentially invented punk music; the kind of snarling aggression that the Stooges and the Rolling Stones had, with more poppy musical structures. It created something new, it was like the big bang for a whole new musical style. Everything about this record is great, it's something that inspired a whole generation, listening to this and you can hear it's aftershocks decades down the line. If I had to pick one song on here that makes the record, it'd be Frankenstein. It's super frantic and strung out, it's a song before its time. Even these guy's stage presence was legendary; they dressed in drag which was pretty controversial at the time, so I've heard. This and Iggy Pop's stage antics that were going on at around the same time set the foundations for frontman behavior for decades to come.

Aphrodite's Child - 666

I've heard this described as being as if the Beatles woke up one day and decided to make a concept album about the book of revelations. It's not a bad description, but it sells the actual musicians on this album short, they were all major powers in the Greek music scene. Anyway, this is the first album I ever heard and I thought to myself that this was a "perfect" record. It really runs the gamut of genres, from sort of baroque pop with the song 4 Horsemen, to musique concrète type experimentation with the song infinity. It all comes together way better than it has any right to for such a heterogeneous collection of sounds. While a lot of the songs - other than maybe 4 horsemen - aren't the kind of thing you'd think too, too much of if you listen to them on their own, this album is much more than the sum of its parts; when you listen to the whole thing, it's really an experience like very little else. Revelations is a weird fucking book, and it can only be adequately adapted to music by a weird album. It couldn't be done better than this, in my opinion.

The Cars - The Cars (1979)

Despite the fact that 85% of this album resides in Classic Rock radio playlist hell, there is no denying that the first album by The Cars is fucking absolutely perfect in every way. I can easily listen to it over and over again and never get bored with it. The production is crisp and clear and it still manages to be a capital R Rock album with new wave flavor, without falling into skinny tie bullshit the way a lot of later bands followed suit and bit hard in the 80s. It's an album that any aspiring songwriter should study as a lesson in how to craft a perfect pop song. Nothing feels extraneous or overstays its welcome, every song knows how long to stay and when to get the fuck out.

Scott Walker - Scott (1967)

I could have easily put down "Scott Walker's first four albums" and be done with it but the first one still has a lot of resonance with me, perhaps a tiny bit of nostalgia tint as I found Scott as a teenager well before the documentary about him had come out, or before he had sort of re-emerged with his albums on seminal goth label 4AD. The first Scott Walker record is largely boosted by Wally Stott's amazing string arrangements and backing. Even for songs that are straight up covers of Jacques Brel (Mathilde, My Death, Amsterdam) he still found a way to make them uniquely his own and transcend the originals, which were more in a French Chanson style. As more info came out in later years with Stephen Kijak's "30 Century Man" documentary about Scott, listening to them talk about his love of classical music and channeling different composers for different parts only makes me appreciate it more. It's bombastic at points and over the top, but that's really the charm of it too.

DEVO - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! ( 1978 )

Front to back perfection. Uncontrollable Urge set the template for every new wave band to try and match up to, completely controlled and tight energy (especially if you watch their performances of it on Fridays or in URGH! A Music War) you can just tell they're fucking unstoppable. Coupled with probably one of the best Rolling Stones covers ever, the album (like most perfect albums) never overstays it's welcome. It's the right amount of weird for the weirdos and I wouldn't want to change a single second of it.

Feels like hip hop is very much under represented in this thread so I'll toss a few albums in the mix.

Not my favourite Cube album but probably objectively his best work and pretty close to hip hop perfection.

One of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, not much else that needs to be said.

I don't really know what to say about this one, its one of those albums that makes you feel a certain way thats difficult to describe. It just has this gritty, moody feel and when you close your eyes you feel like you are in a dingy alley in front of a burning trash can with a half finished bottle of beer in your hand. The world is a dark depressing place but at the same time somehow you feel like you'll make it through in the end.

It's the best... until you listen to the full Bug Club restoration of Secret Messages. Truly peak ELO, and seeing how much it was gimped by the label only highlights even more why Balance of Power wound up being a pretty aggressive and depressing album.

my opinion on Secret Messages is probably obvious.

I think Sade's original run of albums through the 80s and early 90s are all easily 10/10 perfect albums but Love Deluxe is probably her most refined. It's just really easy to listen to, and has a nostalgic vibe to it even thought I was only a 2-year-old when it came out. Sade's sexy voice is obviously the standout but the musicianship is really on point; especially Paul Denman's basslines. I think the fact that it has this nostalgic, bittersweet feel to it in spite of me not growing up listening to Sade shows how timeless it is.
