He sold himself well at the time. He was still as ornery as he is now (maybe a little less), but he has the correct opinions, and no pests at the time. He became infamous for "dunking" on Ben Shapiro over an abortion dilemma hypothetical and then ran and hid when Shapiro responded. I think that's around the time so when he put out feelers with his agent Tor signed the "six figures" three book deal (or was that angry robot?) that they only got two of them.

TL;DR they signed off because he had prog opinions, got more than they bargained for when his books were shit and didn't sell, he's lazy, and then lost his mind over the pests.

Rick co-wrote his first book with his ex-wife, with input from others that were in his life at the time. It’s apparently better than - and notably different to - his other works, thus demonstrating their influence.

These first and second books - with the influence of others all over their content - did reasonably well on a small advance for Angry Robot Books. This ‘success’ as a first-time author, along with his growing position as a ‘Liberal (anti-Trump Democrat) Voice’ on Twitter at a time when companies were all on the TDS train and it hadn’t yet been shown that Twitter followings didn’t translate to pure sales, meant he was able to snag a decent advance and a contract for four books from Tor. He also had a couple of ‘viral’ tweets as @Sneedfully and Peacefully said, pigeon feed numbers now, but still the sort of thing that would get a boomer commissioning editor salivating that they had the next big (haven’t gained a pound, stalker) ‘progressive firebrand’ on their hands.

It’s a position most aspiring authors would give a limb to have been in. Yet he decided to tweet that Norm Macdonald wasn’t funny, the funsters were looking for some fun because Nana (Anthony Cumia) and Moo (Joe Cumia) had gone quiet, his insane arrogance collided with their insatiable appetite for fun, and the rest… is history.

The guy who made Captain Underpants and David Welsh, the guy who wrote Trainspotting both have Dyslexia. Being published doesn't mean you can read or have trouble reading. Nor does it mean you're a good author. It just means a publisher took the chance with producing your book. The only difference with the three I mentioned and Patrick is that those three still get published.
