Culture Patreon’s Ban on “Anime” Art - War on Anime Intensifies

Patreon Is Being Asked to Ban Child Rape Animators — 37,000+ Have Signed the Petition

Anime content is being banned on Patreon now too, allegedly..

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Patreon's coming for everyone now.

Where should Patreon draw the line?
Patreon is a great platform for creators, especially those with strong, loyal fanbases that want to directly support artists. Musician Jack Conte and developer Sam Yam are the founders of Patreon, and the concept was created because creators were getting stiffed by low-paying platforms like YouTube.

But they’re also getting censored, de-monetized, or de-emphasized if they don’t comply with the rules of YouTube, Facebook, or any other platform. Now, Patreon is being asked to issue its own set of policies around certain kinds of content.

Primis Player Placeholder

Patreon’s creators are extremely varied. YouTube videographers, writers, webcomic artists, podcasters, musicians, and many other creative types connect with targeted audiences through Patreon. And the system is simple: the creators can receive funding directly from their fans, or patrons. They can be paid on a recurring basis or per work of art.

The result? Many artists and creators feel that they are able better express themselves and get paid while doing so. In fact, more than a million active users and 50,000 monthly active creators make Patreon a seriously popular solution for artists. At present, Patreon estimates a staggering $150,000,000 is earned by artists on their platform annually.

Sounds great, except some fringe artists are attracting a lot of negative attention. Journalist Vonny Leclerc first discovered something disturbing: a ‘no pornography’ policy by the company wasn’t being enforced. That started the ball rolling.

+ Sorry, You Can’t Fund Your Fetish Porn Site on Patreon Anymore

Patreon has already clamped down on fetish porn site creators, though shocked onlookers are noticing something far more extreme.

Horrific acts of child rape depicted in animation.
Many of these artists are defending their right to create animations depicting child rape, torture, and other activities. Of course, actually doing these acts is completely illegal, but what about drawing it?

These artists also say they’re creating works for patrons that are demanding it. And it turns out that patrons have been requesting all sorts of pervasive acts from creators. These now include horrific acts of child rape, personalized abuse fantasies, and acts of violence.

Lecler says it’s gone too far. “There are more and more violent, hyper-realistic animations being uploaded all the time,” he shared. “I wondered who had the time, now I can see people are making a living out of creating animated rape and snuff films.”

Lecler says Patreon is not only ignoring these activities, they are encouraging them.

patreon_care2petition.jpg

More than 37,000 thousand people have signed the petition demanding that Patreon stop people from selling child abuse animations through their platform.
The petition has been gaining steam, with more than 10,000 signatures arriving in the past 24 hours. Care2Petitions is hosting this particular protest.

According to the petition, this actually goes way beyond child rape illustrations. It also includes artwork of brutal killings, eye-gouging, other forms of rape… the list goes on. Lecler says one prominent artist is earning over $20,000 a month depicting extreme violence.

Here’s a quick excerpt of the petition page:

This is so many levels of disturbing: that these men can make it without caring, and that others buy it. Patreon is helping facilitate the creation of personalised abuse fantasies. One person [I found] is making $20,000 plus a month making adult games. Many making serious bucks.

What does it tell us about society, about sex and capitalism, that the most lucrative animation careers can come from made-to-order pornography? If you want to understand the things men wish they could do to us, look at the porn they create when they don’t have to use real women.

Patreon is being used to fund realistic animations of rape, eye-gouging, torture. Home-invasion when young women are shot in the face and then raped. @Patreon know about this. What’s being done? I can find hundreds of accounts making this kind of content.”

So where should Patreon draw the line?
Technically, this artwork isn’t illegal — at least in the United States. A picture depicting extreme violence may be extremely distasteful, but an artist has the right to create it. Once that crosses into depicted child pornography, however, a judge may have to decide.

Another legal counter-argument relates to the actual harm done. If patrons and artists exist in an insular environment, one free of actual crime, it’s possible this group is merely acting out gruesome fantasies without dragging people into them. Some of the artwork in question violates Patreon’s pornography policy, though not all of it does.

+ Less Than 2% of Content Creators on Patreon Earn Monthly Minimum Wage

If that artwork is connected to actual crimes — or worse, if it’s depicting real events — then there’s a much different level of enforcement that’s needed.

Now, Patreon is undoubtedly going to be forced to respond — and make tough decisions that balance the broader interests of the community.

More as this develops.

"One time I drew one of my OCs just way too flat, and they were like hey maybe don't? Yes some women are flat but whether or not to FIGHT FOR ART was beyond the scope of the interaction."

Wait, so if I'm reading this right, you can't even draw a flat-chested woman on the platform, even if she's clearly above the age of adulthood? Or am I reading this entirely wrong?
You have to represent women as they are in the west! If they have anything under a BMI of 30, then they are too skinny, unrealistic, and that's just as damaging as hypothetical child porn. (I've heard someone say that with total earnestness, too. She specifically said they should ban all art that was "underweight" because it ruined expectations for healthy body image. She wants a world where all art of women are rotund)

What happened? I thought people hated moral crusaders, yet here we are talking about drawn art somehow being this transgressive thing again. Even if I don't like the style, the substance, or the outcome I have a hard time approving a wholesale ban on a wide spectrum of art, especially when we're okay drawing super violence and gore like it's a-okay. Just a weird dichotomy, but at the end of the day there's nothing you can do to fight these VC San Fran businesses when you're playing in their sandbox.

Good luck making a patreon clone, if you get pushed off from them there's a good chance the credit processors and banks will sever ties with you as soon as they see you. It's all part of the lovely social credit system we're building with nothing but digital money!

Keep in mind this is a screenshot I took in 2017, and Patreon started allowing people to begin hiding their income shortly after so they probably made more in 2019/2020.
I was gonna ask are they really gonna nuke her cos she earns them so much money that seems nuts. I really expected them to come after fan art first (even with the ’tutorial’ loophole)

Let's hope she saved and invested all that crazy money she made

Worst part is that it's not just loli, but they may be going after all anime style artwork. Even SFW stuff.

SJW's seem to have this irrational hate boner for anything drawn in an anime style, even if it's not pornographic.

But they love Steven Universe and capeshit, and a lot of SJW's are also furries...so I think the cat ladies are projecting too much.
It makes me think Cute Aggression has some validity to it

Welp. Guess patreon has chosen death. if there's one thing you don't do on the net, it's piss off the weebs.
This will have zero effect on their income. If it did they wouldnt outright ban them in the first place.

All these people saying that this is some enfringement of freedom of speech/expression have to understand that at the end of the day, despite being an open platform, patreon is still a business that has to keep its public image intact.

I'd love for them to try to handwave the images of patreon staff in ku klux klan robes that are coming. hell i'm working on some artwork myself.

also, you can't claim to be an open platform and then ban a whole countries art style. its flat out retarded to try to say you can have both.

Patreon alternatives should start lubing their bank accounts to prevent any money from getting away via new users.

So what's their definition of anime, are they gonna have real humans sitting there judging if a pic is 'anime' enough? I thought Patreon already attempted to ban anything sexual from their platform last year? Fuck 'em, just draw huge bara men with big swinging dicks to piss them off and call it homophobic if they try to ban that too.

Eh, companies make a lot of really stupid decisions, especially when they believe they're morally superior.
You're making the error of assuming most people who use the internet these days are as jaded as we are when it comes to porn, lol. I think most people here who have probably used websites like reddit and 4chan in the past are pretty desensitized to stuff like hentai but the general public is not.

From a PR point of view, they have much more to lose than to gain from allowing anime porn. I don't think they have some kind of liberal agenda, I really think they're just trying to cover their asses because the vast majority of people would be disturbed when they realize that they're putting money on a website that hosts animated child porn.

Which would mean it is not art. Fagetry was pretty well hated in every time. Men of patrician tastes in all times have sought twinks for their sexual pleasure as it is the best, purest, and safest form of recreational sex. That does not mean anyone wants fagsex to be acceptable. Twinkophilia is both heterosexual and normal. Always has been. Always will.

I know that degenerates want to "legitimize" and "justify' their depravity. No one wants to be seen as the disgusting subhuman scum that they are. I will not defend scumbags who draw it just because they are opposed to the scumbags at patroen.

Draw all the kid sex you want, pedo. I do not care. You are not the victim though because some company does not want to help you make money doing it. The only help you need is a rope and something to tie it to.
We get it you have a tiny peepee and need some help getting out of the walk-in closet, no need to sperg

Most normies think cartoons are just... cartoons? Malls sell shirts ft. Sexy young Sakura and gangster weed Naruto, its seen as degenerate, sure, but not "actual cp" tier. I'm pretty sure even the normie-est shit right now, My Hero Academia, would be censored considering these guidelines.

Rate me optimistic, but I'd feel the normal person would be more disturbed that a company is trying to worm its way into forcing clients to prove their purity more than whether some cartoon drawings have tits a bit too tiny.

dude makes smut that is obviously toeing the line of what a service like patreon will tolerate. OP title is stupid clickbait.

This all makes sense now.

Patreon is Team Rei.

Regardless, I'd feel the normal person would be more disturbed that a company is trying to worm its way into forcing clients to open up their personal google drives to prove their purity more than whether some cartoon drawings have tits a bit too tiny.
The fact that the terms 'normie' and 'degenerate' are now used unironically on this website makes me feel a bit old but anyway,

The fact that the petition got 37k signatures makes your point essentially moot. Any company that is facing potentially 37000 people boycotting their brand, especially a relatively small internet service like Patreon, would immediately shit it's pants and go into damage control.

We can argue for years about the validity of censorship on the internet, but I assure you this was not a SJW cabal trying to censor asian cartoons. Any business Patreon's size would make the same decision.

37k ain't shit, smaller companies have wiped their asses with petitions with 4x that amount signatures.

Problem is that they might be banning all anime artwork, not just the porn.

That means even normal PG rated stuff like Sailor Moon, Naruto, or My Hero Academia would be banned solely for the art style it's drawn in. I don't think it's an SJW cabal trying to ban the anime art style though.

Either Patreon is trying to just ban hentai (or maybe even just the more extreme types of hentai like loli or guro) and weren't clear enough in their wording or a major corporation like Disney and Marvel or Warner Brothers and DC are tightening the screws on the payment processors to try and crush any of the potential competition.

It's probably the former and people are jumping the gun, since a total ban on all anime artwork is a really dumb move for Patreon, but I'm not going to entirely rule out the latter idea since I wouldn't put it past The Rat to try and enforce their monopoly now that their MCU gravy train is no longer headed in any clear direction and Disney's finally starting to take some major hits as Iger makes his exit and Corona-chan is literally killing their biggest audience in droves.
