What started as a way for small creators to protect from big corporations was flipped on it's head, in true American fashion.

The rationale for the patent system was to promote technological progress. The Constitution literally says:

To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.

Plus, "big corporations"? What are you talking about, the first federal patent law came in 1790 if I remember correctly.

It's not quite as bad, but big companies still do a lot of legal shenanigans to prolong patent validity.

I remember how few years back it was celebrated as a huge environmental victory when the EU banned some widely used pesticide or whatever. Turns out Monstanto's (I think) patent on it was about to expire, so they created a new slightly altered formula and patented it again then had the EU ban it to keep competition out.

IP is cringe and frankly evil. Use the GPL.
