WASHINGTON:
Pakistan currently has 140 to 150 nuclear warheads and the stockpile is expected to increase to 220 to 250 by 2025 if the current trend continues, according to a latest report by authors keeping a track of the country's nukes.

The current estimate of 140 to 150 nuclear weapons exceeds the projection made by the US Defense Intelligence Agency in 1999 that Pakistan would have 60 to 80 warheads by 2020.

"We estimate that the country's stockpile could more realistically grow to 220 to 250 warheads by 2025, if the current trend continues. If that happens, it would make Pakistan the world's fifth-largest nuclear weapon state," Hans M Kristensen, Robert S Norris and Julia Diamond said in the report 'Pakistani nuclear forces 2018'.

Mr Kristensen, the lead author, is the director of the Nuclear Information Project with the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) in Washington, DC.

Over the past decade, the US assessment of nuclear weapons security in Pakistan appears to have changed considerably from confidence to concern, particularly as a result of the introduction of tactical nuclear weapons, the report said.

"With several delivery systems in development, four plutonium production reactors, and its uranium enrichment facilities expanding, however, Pakistan has a stockpile that will likely increase further over the next 10 years," says the report.

Pakistan continues to expand its nuclear arsenal with more warheads, more delivery systems and a growing fissile materials production industry, it said.

"Analysis of a large number of commercial satellite images of Pakistani army garrisons and air force bases shows what appear to be mobile launchers and underground facilities that might be related to nuclear forces," said the report.

The authors observe that the size of the increase will depend on many factors.

Two key factors will be how many nuclear-capable launchers Pakistan plans to deploy, and how much the Indian nuclear arsenal grows.

"Speculation that Pakistan may become the world's third-largest nuclear weapon state - with a stockpile of some 350 warheads a decade from now - are, we believe, exaggerated, not least because that would require a buildup two to three times faster than the growth rate over the past two decades," the authors said.

According to the report, Pakistan is modifying its nuclear posture with new short-range nuclear-capable weapon systems to counter military threats below the strategic level.

"The efforts seek to create a full-spectrum deterrent that is designed not only to respond to nuclear attacks, but also to counter an Indian conventional incursion onto Pakistani territory," it said.

"This development has created considerable concern in other countries, including the United States, which fears that it lowers the threshold for nuclear use in a military conflict with India," the report added.

Pakistan and India having nukes is really scary.
A hot war is going to break out again between them sometime. Possibly multiple times in the coming future. One of those times India, Pakistan, or both will say "Fuck yeah it's missile time"

It's too bad that radiation really ruins the living space when compared to biological warfare, there's a lot of good real estate those two countries could free up between themselves for everyone who enjoys indoor plumbing

Meanwhile, by the Pakistani government's own metrics, not even 60% of Pakis are literate, over 40 million Pakis live in poverty, and the country has an HDI lower than Bangladesh, which always used to be poorer than Pakistan.

Yet instead of spending more money on fixing their country, the Pakis want to build more nukes in addition to proportionately spending more on their military than the United States.

Watching the race towards disaster that is Pakistan and India having nukes makes me reaaaallllyyyyyy glad the Apartheid-era South African government shut down their nuclear program on the way out.

God help us. Nukes are the last thing fucking Pakistan needs.

Why are we still making nuclear warheads anyway? They’re horrible weapons that shouldn’t exist and we’re already stuck with the ones we have.

Israel has nukes too (shhh they're a secret, don't tell anyone), you need a Muslim country similarly armed to round out the Abrahamic triad.

An even better question is why do we let France keep their nukes? Out of all the western nuclear powers they're most likely to use them. Probably on Algeria or Mali.

THE WEST IS RUINED!"

Because nukes, leading to mutually assured destruction, are a useful deterrent, keeping countries from going to war with each other using conventional weapons.

The unfortunate thing about that is when war finally does break out, whoever starts losing the conventional war first will knock the chessboard off the table and fuck themselves, their enemy, and anyone in the vicinity up

Remember why the US lets the third world have nukes and not Europe? I mean even Hitler managed to put that poo in the loo!

I'm not sure what you are talking about. It was France and the UK that helped build Pakistan nuclear reactors. It was France that helped build Israels nuclear reactor.

The US also supplies the missile systems to the UK allowing them to deliver their nuclear warheads.

On the bright side, the only country Pakistan wants to wipe off the face of the planet is India. I think the rest of us can sleep soundly knowing that we don't live in the one country that all of Pakistan's nukes will be directed toward in the case of a minor border skirmish on the Indian-Pakistani border.

Well, maybe, the scenario has never actually been tested in earnest.

That said this will just fuck up Pakistan and India so I don't care all that much.
