Opinion: The data are clear: The boys are not all right

Andrew Yang is the founder of the Forward Party and a former candidate for New York mayor and U.S. president.

Here is one of the biggest problems facing America: Boys and men across all regions and ethnic groups have been failing, both absolutely and relatively, for years. This is catastrophic for our country.

The data are clear. Boys are more than twice as likely as girls to be diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; are five times as likely to spend time in juvenile detention; and are less likely to finish high school.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t get better when boys become adults.

Men now make up only 40.5 percent of college students. Male community college enrollment declined by 14.7 percent in 2020 alone, compared with 6.8 percent for women. Median wages for men have declined since 1990 in real terms. Roughly one-third of men are either unemployed or out of the workforce. More U.S. men ages 18 to 34 are now living with their parents than with romantic partners.

Economic transformation has been a big contributor. More than two-thirds of manufacturing workers are men; the sector has lost more than 5 million jobs since 2000. That’s a lot of unemployed men. Not just coincidentally, “deaths of despair” — those caused by suicide, overdose and alcoholism — have surged to unprecedented levels among middle-aged men over the past 20 years.

Research shows that one significant factor women look for in a partner is a steady job. As men’s unemployment rises, their romantic prospects decline. Unsurprisingly, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from 1960 to 2010, the proportion of adults without a college degree who marry plummeted from just over 70 percent to roughly 45 percent.

Many boys are thus often growing up raised by single mothers, the share more than doubling between 1980 and 2019, from 18 percent to 40 percent.

A study from 2015 found that “as more boys grow up without their father in the home, and as women … are viewed as the more stable achievers, boys and girls alike [may] come to see males as having a lower achievement orientation. … College becomes something that many girls, but only some boys, do.”

Yes, men have long had societal advantages over women and in some ways continue to be treated favorably. But male achievement — alongside that of women — is a condition for a healthy society. And male failure begets male failure, to society’s detriment. Our media, institutions and public leadership have failed to address this crisis, framing boys and men as the problem themselves rather than as people requiring help.

This needs to change.

Helping boys and men succeed should be a priority for all our society’s institutions. Schools that have succeeded in keeping boys on track should be expanded, by both increasing the number of students they serve and exporting their methods to other schools. Vocational education and opportunities should be redoubled; the nation’s public school system should start the process for early age groups, and apprenticeship programs should be supported by the federal government. Nonprofits helping boys and men — such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the YMCA — should receive more investment.

Resources that keep families together when they want to stay together, such as marriage counseling, should be subsidized by the government — a much more cost-efficient approach than dealing with the downstream effects. The enhanced child tax credit should be renewed, helping stabilize families.

Drives for national service and contribution, such as an American Exchange Program or national service years, should be resuscitated. And businesses and industries that employ large numbers of men, such as manufacturing, should be invested in and reinvigorated.
On a cultural level, we must stop defining masculinity as necessarily toxic and start promoting positive masculinity. Strong, healthy, fulfilled men are more likely to treat women well.

The above is, of course, a prodigious undertaking. But I see the need around me all the time.

A number of my friends have become detached from society. Everyone hits a snag at some point — losing a job, facing a divorce — but my male friends seem less able to bounce back. Male dysfunction tends to take on an air of nihilism and dropping out. As a society, we don’t provide many avenues for healthy recovery.

Here’s the simple truth I’ve heard from many men: We need to be needed. We imagine ourselves as builders, soldiers, workers, brothers — part of something bigger than ourselves. We deal with idleness terribly.

“A man … with no means of filling up time,” George Orwell wrote, is “as miserable out of work as a dog on the chain.” Left to our own devices, many of us will fail. And from our failure, terrible things result for the country, well beyond any individual self-destruction.

Hey guys, found the incel! Women don't owe you anything and nobody will ever love your tiny penis, chud. Lol men want to be oppressed so bad, imagine thinking literally anything in modern society disprivileges men. When you're privileged, equality feels like oppression. Why don't you cry more, incel? I need to top up my 'Incel Tears' mug!

...

Sorry, that was my Reddit impression. Did I not preface that?

Forget it Yang, no one wants to hear you after bending the knee because you defended Rogan.

Also ADD is a meme disease for pill pushing.

Well Andy, you're going to have to get the blue haired ;landwhale feminists to stop shrieking over men. And since you crumple so easily you'll never manage that. Men are fucked because of people like you, enjoy the ride you and your cronies built.

Turns out men get more uppity than women when told to bend the knee to The Man. Clearly this their fault, and has nothing to do at all with the feminization or education and society.

Men have a new champion for their mental health and its Andrew Yang. Hopefully this goes better then his presidential campaign or his.. New York mayoral campaign.

As much as Yang isn't our guy, he's right about this kind of thing. Historically we've always needed something to do and something to belong to. The worst thing we can be is useless. Unneeded means unwanted.

But perhaps it's not that men are failing. Men are being failed by our society. Masculinity is mocked and belittled as fragile or toxic, chivalry is ridiculed, and that's without getting into pushing porn and troon outs on men that's leaving them either docile or sexually confused.

"I'm a member of a political party that has demonized and dehumanized men as sex-crazed, psychotic, violent monsters for years, but here-let me tell you how we can fix this."
Name me one Asian that wouldn't fall into many small chunks mid-sentence if they openly admitted they were Republican in any way, shape, or form.

Well then stop telling men that they are misogynistic rapists just for existing. White heterosexual normal (as in not trans) men are being bumped down to lower than dirt on a constant basis. This doesn't bode well for self esteem. We've spent years telling white people in general they are the devil. And it's been sanctified by the media. And we have spent years telling men they are awful. The media has screamed "RAPE CULTURE REEEEEE!" at western men while just kind of pretending Boko Haram, a terrorist group in Africa that literally kidnaps underage girls and forces them to marry extremist soldiers, doesn't exist. Rapefugees are let into Europe en masse and given slaps on the wrist because "they didn't know any better"

Everything in this world seems misguided and misaimed now. Everyone is worried about the wrong things and too afraid to call out precious POC cultures on their horrible treatment of women and children. I just keep waiting for things to shift. But I'll probably die before that happens at this rate.

You know what, forget college. Learn to be a plumber or a mechanic or something. College is so wokeified now it's not even worth it unless you have a very specific academic goal in mind.

As someone the schools wanted to medicate because I "couldn't focus," focus wasn't my problem, boredom was, and I knew everything that was being covered in most classes. I'm not saying that what it is for everyone, but there is a difference between boys and girls, especially when you reach middle school or higher and puberty starts taking hold. Boys are more kinetic/action oriented than girls are, putting something in their hands can be far more effective than telling them to memorize something. You know, part of being a teacher (in most states IIRC) is having to take psychology classes; this shit is known, but the actual enforcement arm of education does everything it can to nip it in the bud.

But outside of all that, the weakening of everything in society makes boys chaotic/depressed and it only worsens as they age. You see how hard society as a whole caters to girls, how they can flip between a princess and a bad-ass action girl like the sexual alphabet flips through genders (and you have to get it right, every single fucking time), and how any positive role model for you gets demonized at every chance. As much as I don't like combat sports (especially MMA fans), take martial arts, at a real dojo, where you can spar, kick ass and get your ass kicked. It can do a lot for your body, mind, and soul. Alongside that, get a hobby where you work with your hands and mind; cars, electrician, masonry, woodworking, something that engages your body and mind at the same time, become a fucking gym rat and get all those personal trainer certifications, you can get paid to hang out at the gym all day.

I'm not saying that will fix all the problems; but boredom and lack of self-worth are huge. Do something that builds confidence in yourself and something that can give you a good work ethic and job, and you'll be okay.

Dead on parody and we wonder why incels are a thing when some people unironically talk like this.

The cherry on top is that a lot of young men then turned to video games and other fantasy escapism to at least live out the fantasy of heroism, of doing something that matters.

So what did they do? Proceed to take even that away from us and again, they wonder why there's so much anger out there.

You can only beat and starve a dog so many times before he bites back.

I wonder if Andrew Yang is being purposefully ignorant. Everything happening is by design.

There's a theory going around that education systems (public and private) are fundamentally feminine in nature. It would explain why girls and women outperform their male counterparts in every aspect of schooling except sports yet men dominate the real world's upper echelons. I mean just think about it, most boys aren't wired to sit and listen to boring know it all for 8 hours a day. They don't need dozens of medications, they need to be taught in a way that actively engages how they learn.

You're not wrong, but I wouldn't say it's feminine as much as it's become more feminized. Boys still choose math and science topics more than girls and excel there; the difference is, the lower levels of schooling (K-12) don't use hands-on approaches to things. One of the issues is the lack of recess time, because even if boys are more kinetic, if you let them wear themselves out by running around, they'll be less rambunctious and less distracted, because their body isn't telling them "IT'S TIME TO JUMP UP AND RUN AROUND AND GO CRAZY!!!! AGHGHH!GH!" But they don't even do much of that anymore; the only exercise you get is walking to/from school, between classes, and whatever bullshit PE class the state mandates. So they have a lot of pent up energy to release, and they can't focus because of it, because the schools would rather shove you in a poorly lit room with something talking about something that's as exciting as watching bread mold.

Personally, I knew a lot of the stuff, would 100% of my classes but not do my homework or anything else, because it was boring. I'd rather be doing a hundred things instead of having shit reiterated for the hundredth time. Yes I know the answer is 613, who is Eli Whitney, or that it was Poseidon who gifted horses to humans; can I do something else? I knew 80%-90% of everything K-12 taught me by 6th grade. English wasn't even book reports or expanding my vocabulary, just reading books by people who were dead a least a hundred years before I was born. History wasn't anything new, just maybe a greater focus on certain events, but still nothing new. It was only math and science, building on what came before that was new. I don't consider myself that fucking special, if you're not legitimately damaged in some way, the learning part of school isn't hard.

As for engaging how they learn; there's a reason why when two men meet each other, one of the first questions is "What do you do?" Men define themselves by what they do for a living, and knowing what someone does helps identify what kind of person they are. It's also why a bit of a stereotype or whatever you may want to call it in family movies; if the boy is having problems and his dad presses him to talk about it, they don't sit in his room having a face to face, they're outside throwing a baseball back and forth or something. I'm not a doctor, a PhD, or anything (but I have read the material, so that makes me an internet professional); but there is a legitimate mechanism that has activity be an outlet for boys. And yes it may require more work and effort to utilize, but it's something that is known, but is being ignored, and having boys be seen as defective.

Competition is another way to do it. Boys are more competitive while girls are more cooperative (yes I know there are exceptions, shut the fuck up).
