Yes, were there is an actual cost to updating dependencies. It's not like newer dependencies are automatically better.

There's a significant difference of degree between "we do not immediately update" and "we use Windows 7 in 2026".

I was referring to "why don't they just automatically update all dependencies".
As for why sticking with win7, probably because it was a build machine and less overhead is much more important than security updates for such a machine?

I am not sure if this was discussed but has but putting aside the whole cult and memory safety stuff, does anyone feel like rust is the new way for people who want to bypass or change licenses?
I noticed this when looking into that whole coreutils rewrite it uses MIT while the original coreutils uses GNU.

I agree with what you're saying but this notion has been floating around for months if not more, pretty sure it was in this very thread also. Even Lunduke was talking about how the whole rust thing seems to be about replacing GNU code with MIT code months ago in multiple videos.

@Null since xenforo is back in the news and I forgot to mention this when it was relevant, can't you just tell claude to rewrite xenforo in rust and relicense it however you want? just remember to prompt it to use some cleanroom method (doesn't matter if it follows it) and make no mistakes: https://developers.slashdot.org/sto...replaced-with-llm-generated-clone-re-licensed

Technically XenForo is "source available" and not Free Software so its subdued, but the idea of RIIR with AI seems extremely toroony. Not sure if based or niggerlicious.
