Fuck me it's so weird to be reminded that online you literally could be talking to anybody at all. I should have learned by now but I guess it's hard to outgrow that 90s mentality that not everybody who posts online had to be somewhat put together enough to use a computer. Even if it wasn't actually true back then the illusion was that it was.

re: internet users in the 90s; they were generally more coherent and technologically literate, but equally as autistic as this. They might hide their spergery better, and it was harder to find their love sonnets to cartoon raccoons, but only because you had to know which webring their personal site was on, and then had to click through like five nested frames (praying the embedded Offspring MIDIs didn't crash your browser) in order to get to the page "Raccoons I Want to Fuck" and "balldangler76ucla Is The Worst Usenet Poster Here's Why".

In fact, if anything, the lower barrier to online entry has made comically inept spergs less common online, since normies without any special interests beyond going to work, raising a family, and enjoying a common hobby like hiking or watching TV, now grossly outnumber the raccoon fucker set.

I have heard this from people who were there. I was 9 when the 90s ended so I really only had a few years online then, mostly reading gaming forums and guides and stuff. It kind of makes me wonder what subtle sperg vibes i consider to be normal because i was exposed to them so young. Not racoon fucking obviously. but subtle things like how people react, or talk to each other that i just subconsciously picked up on that haven't caused enough of a problem in my real world interactions for anybody to have mentioned to my face.
