Imagine if Tomar, the father of the ugly boys themselves, kept an eye on some KF threads to ensure the boys don't get embroiled in bad dealings with known freaks. Kinda like vetting ppl they meet?
Would not be a bad strat even if the above line reads as completely deluded. Gotta be careful in the Content Creation scene.
If only they had Tomar when they were literally living and working with Shadman for years.

I love the Ding Dong and Julian era, it’s where I began watching, and has hundreds of great moments. I don’t understand how people can dislike the DD&J era and get annoyed with them, but then also lap up Dave and Cory.

I think it is mostly based on if Ding Dong was in a shit mood that day or not. If he was having fun, everyone was, so good videos are really good, but when he was grumpy those videos can be really bad. There at the end he was grumpier more often than not, but I also can't really blame him after the Game Grumps fans attacking him and a-logging him in general. I probably wouldn't want to interact on the internet after that either.

I'm not sure if DingDong ever posted on SomethingAwful but I believe he was aware of the "Lets Play Subforum" rules because he typically followed them. The examples that come to mind are editing out boring moments and dead air, not reading every text box out loud, choosing fun and fast arcady games or games one of the three were very knowledgeable about. He'd also cut off redundant or unfunny bits. That era was great because DD genuinely knew what went into a good let's play and ran a tight ship. It's a shame his streams are unwatchable because he's a mopey whining bore when left to his own devices.

Every so often, DingDong actually blasts or groans about demands that go into recording. For instance, I remember him bringing up a GameGrumps collab, and Arin said he should "be more positive" or something like that. The "What did the booger say to the butt?" bit I posted last page was also from him being a topic of content creators always having to be trying to shoot off rapid-fire stuff. I vaguely recall him expressing that he'd rather talk more about graphics rendering, game history, and the cultures surrounding it over doing another bit.

The fun game choices were 100% them, however. DingDong's criteria tend to be if there's something interesting or if he really likes the character designs, but even if you put taste aside, he was simply the guy who liked video games, and that's what made things feel as organic as they did. The fringe, shitty game choices also stopped after DD&J left, so I presume he's one just to check out some shovelware to poke fun at.

His streams will be watchable for the first hour or two, or when Julian is around. It's a night-and-day difference if he's so much as in the same room as him.

Yeah good point, DD & Julian's contempt for the whole ~~waaaacky YouTube gamers~~ bit was another big appeal of that era that stopped Oneyplays from feeling like another Game Grumps or SuperMega.

Do you guys like Ding Dong and Julian era? I tend to not really enjoy it, and I like the spastic combinations of weirdos that Chris knew as he matured into the big ugly boy we know him as today.
It's to this day the only era I really enjoy. I've never really minded their negativity, it was actually refreshing to have two unapologetically critical people. Their return didn't have the same quality, though.

I think the problem with the YIIK finale is that Ding Dong was trying to live up to/outdo the Pokemon Red finale that he went all out for in editing
While I understand the creative urge to make a high-effort silly gag which is then ultimately chewed up by perfectionism and never released, considering I've been there myself, a silly editing gag was not why I personally wanted to see the ending. I wanted to see the capstone, the conclusion of the long journey, and that moment in the Shire where the gang all reflects on the long, weird road they've traveled, there and back again

Instead I got a crippling case of blueballs. Because ever since the gang hasn't been able to maintain a real 'adventure' style LP. Even when they finish games, it feels like the game was just going on in the background while they made loud noises, largely because that attracts paypiggie zoomers who repeat jokes verbatim in youtube comments sections

Yeah, this is kind of sad and annoying, and if they go back to play a game again they usually just start over instead of picking up where they left off. I imagine that has more to do with scheduling than anything, hard to start an in-depth game and have the same recording crew next session. Say what you will about DingDong and Julien but at least a decent portion of the conversations were about the game they were playing at the time. It added a bit of structure that the current ADHD distraction videos we get today don't have.

It's hard for me to take the idea seriously when the vast majority of the developed world, somehow, manages to have social lives and engage in regular hobbyist activity despite working 40+ hours a week in soul-sucking labor

Like there's guys who make open mic nights every single week who are pulling 6-10s and use their one day off to hit them up. I think these guys could manage to find two four-hour blocks twice a month to keep a playthrough going consistently.

I think a big difference about the channel with DD&J is that is was really their channel, not just chriese. Chris was the face, Julian was the heart and Ding Dong was the backbone with his editing. Ding Dong's editing style and tendency to cut out a lot of crap content really made the show better.

These days it's just Dex the Swede. He's okay, but he can get very obnoxious fast, I think of the Resident Evil 1 playthrough where there's an edit or something hidden in the backround every single frame, it's just obnoxious. Cory does not help at all asking for edits all the time, it feels like I'm watching a Game Grumps episode.

I miss when this used to be a joke.

I can't watch modern op because a 40 minute vid is compromised of a dozen or more nothing conversations bereft of anything funny or interesting

You couldn't have a hitler hypothetical today because cory or Dave would immediately be distracted and not bother engaging
