I'm told by my horrified parents that at this point in the story, I said, "What's he cryin' about? Just get another one, they all look alike!"

I remember seeing the edited down theatrical version in school that has tits. Much more tolerable that way.

But really, the story isn't historically accurate at all. Imagine telling a story about the US Civil war, except all the historical figures are replaced with expys. President Blabraham Stinkin VS Defferson Javis. Kind of like that. This is one time that a complete reimagining would be a good thing. People could see the Sengoku Era as it really was.

Did you read the book? I didn't see the original series so I don't know how it compares but the book is written like a thriller.

Who cares?
I did find it annoying that it made it unnecessary complicated keeping track of who the real people were. I think the argument for the renaming would be it lets him deviate more from their real personalities and events - doesn't have to characterize them accurately - but more annoying than it was useful.

You should, it's one of the best TV mini-series ever made.
Also probably the most accurate depiction of historical Japan on film.

Non of the candy coating Japanese filmmakers make feudal Japan look like.

I've read the novel many times. No-one has written a better depiction of the culture, politics and machinations of feudal Japan. James Clavell never equalled this feat in his later works, and I frankly don't see how he could have. It is simply one of the greatest books ever written, and very likely because it is fictionalised history, not just complete fiction.

I loved the miniseries when I was a kid but it obviously missed a lot of what was in the novel.
I hope they stay true to the source work for this new series.

I remember not liking it as a kid because they had long stretches of Japanese dialogue without subtitles. Everything usually got explained to the honky later, but I found myself wondering "Why can't I understand what they're saying now? Why do I have to wait?"

I just found out about this. That book was the best I've read. I have to stay alive long enough so I can see either how good the adaptation is or how badly they've butchered it.

People who whine about historical inaccuracy don't get the gist of the novel, and it shows. It's a book about politics and adapting to life in an alien culture. It's a novel that rewards the resourcefulness and fluidity/adapation of characters and it rewards the reader for hanging in there.

Please read it. I'm going to get an audiobook version of it just so I can listen to it on the drives I take every week. Like @Foltest stated, it's beefy. But it's so fucking worth it.

My dad really liked King Rat (although he said it's sad). When I get more time off, I'm going to start reading it. Interesting novel given Clavell's personal experiences.
