Old Web: Aesthetic Fetishization - The fetishizing of the old Internet by people who would have lobbied to get it taken down/censored during that era.

Case #3839 of Zoomers fetishizing their parents past in search of nostalgia. I just completed Hypnospace Outlaw so the point is extra fresh in my mind.

As someone who actually lived through a lot of these things, I don't really mind posers and I do enjoy these aesthetics myself, so I sometimes come off as much younger than I am online. Though I don't interact much with these people anymore, specifically because they didn't grow up with stuff I did and they perceive these aesthetics on a different angle. And also obviously avoiding needless drama.

Don't we do this with pretty much everything else beyond recent fashion trends as well? Nobody is really defensive of medieval LARP, as all the cohorts of these eras have died off long time ago. Or enjoying cultural elements of other nations (leftists that scream about cultural appropriation aren't relevant), it's a similar mindset as gatekeeping parts of culture that aren't meant to be gatekept in the first place. I think it's an element of pride (which I can relate to, like I said, I grew up with things that youth these days either doesn't remember that much or straight up didn't see at all), but it doesn't make it less petty to me. This type of thinking leads me to the mindset that I hoped I will never grow up with.

Granted, the content is often underwhelming for obvious reasons, but it's just what most art is like, regardless if it's poser art or genuine art.

You gotta learn how to seperate the posers from those who actually give a crap.

As someone who grew up in the peak of frutiger aero styling we really didnt realize how good things were fashion wise until it was gone. I think most people just went king with progress because we enjoyed the new features and really until 2014-2019 period was when everyone peaked.
A lot of zoomers don't understand people in that time period we're freaking out about Romney and we still had terrorism and a bleak reality so for people technology was this world of escape whetr all is well.

That reminded me, it's actually common for people to be nostalgic for horrible periods of their lives. Last page mentioned covid lockdowns, and I'm not going to lie, as bad as things were, I'm lowkey nostalgic for 2020-2021. Other periods of my life that I'm nostalgic for were the worst years of my life.

I think this is because stress is some sort of a stimulant that forces us into a "tunnel vision" of sorts and mobilizes our minds. So we have an intense focus on three things, major threat, grounding in current reality, and everything that we use for escapism is actually something that we finally see the true beauty and value of, because contrasting horrors of reality finally force us to acknowledge all the good stuff that we have. Even if it's just pretty art that sparks hope.

So, if my guess is right, this is why a lot of people miss bad days. It's not that they were actually better, but circumstances forced us into facing positivity, beauty, and optimism that we would have likely ignored if it wasn't for stress. Huh, come to think of it, isn't depression more common in first world privileged countries...?

I tend to forget that people then were more sane, at least outwardly for the most part than they are now.
Agreed, raising children on the Internet is abusive and I despise the parents that do that shit.
Which is a shame cuz that's a normal part of growth but it's being stunted by weak-willed fags.
Kids were very much also on the internet of old, but at least they were generally taught basic opsec. Don't give out your name, address, photos, don't click those "you're the 10,000th visitor" popups ect. It wasn't perfect but it was at least something compaired to the complete disreguard we have now. Hell, I remember having school assemblies where they told us all this stuff about the internet and keeping safe on it. All this being tossed aside really baffles me. You'd think these parents who experienced the internet of old would pass on these practices to their kids but nope. Just hand them an Ipad, leave 'em to it and be shocked when they get groomed by a 40 year old creep on Roblox.
Lmao Maybe I should start hiding fish puns in my posts.

People who fetishize the old web should have to slum it on the Freenet with the paedos

That being said, things genuinely were better when the Internet was a desk in your house, and the web was less monetized/ exploited.

I have seen a lot of troops advocating for the old Internet even though they would have been eviscerated on it back then. And now, they're clamoring to make their own Internet that would be without a doubt heavily censored to hell and back without any of the soul of the old Internet. They only care about appearances without taking into consideration the content and meaning of what they're consuming.

I liked the old web, didn't like the skeuomorphism of the early 00's, what gets called Y2k or frutiger (by retards) which began with apple (OSX) and windows XP was always tacky and uninspired, that attempt at making icons and UI objects look real by imitating real materials and objects got old fast and the technical limitations of the time means most of it looks like ass now. I know everybody hates flat/metro/material/whatever style now but when it showed up the skeuomorphism was getting really goddamn stale.

I liked the design of the late 80's and 90's more, tho now that's getting bastardized too.
and this particular one has mostly reared its head around the same time as the Emo/Scene "revival" that does the same shit
Was never into emo, what's the difference between the og and the nu-emos now? the chicks got even fatter? are the guys even gayer than back then?
Hell I'm already seeing people be nostalgic for the 2010-2016 era.
Besides the ones that were basically in diapers back then and just get nostalgia for their childhood, most of these people are the far-left types who simply long for what was the peak of their political power, not getting that it was their excesses back then what caused the current situation.
and the analogue VHS shit
That one its very ironic in the actual sense of the word since it never actually looks like real VHS did, its still more crisp and less blurry than real cassettes were. Plus most zoomers would shit themselves if told they have to drive to a place to rent a 2-hour movie for the entire weekend instead of an endless stream of slop to their phone like they have now.

Also fuck the ones getting into minidiscs and CRTs, they turned two perfectly good niches into a cesspit full of scalpers.
