On its own merits Canada is like a less interesting version of Australia. It can be helpful if you're a diplomatic nerd and you really want access to Cuba. I believe Canadians can travel there as tourists but US citizens need to provide a better reason than just wanting to see the place.
It's a big country by square km, but there's really just a narrow band close to the US border that has any population density to speak of. There's but 40 million Canadians, there are 330 million US people. (Mostly this is between Windsor and Toronto.) It's comparatively easy to become a Canadian citizen. My in-laws used this as a lilypad to the West. Most people in Kiwi Farms are butthurt about Canada because they think it's too easy to immigrate and Canadians are too tolerant, but this appears to be a European/US gripe rather than an authentically Canadian one. And anyway, it's not as if London is free of Indian and Asian immigrants either.
My spouse says that Canada is an easy country to be mediocre in, and a difficult country to be successful in. This is partly because it's got a really high income tax assessment on the top tax bracket, which allegedly de-motivates entrepreneurs. Competition for entry to Canadian higher ed is tough because the tuition is cheap. The Canadians I know also comment that the excise taxes on things like alcohol and tobacco are much higher in Canada than in the US. People who live close to the border will sometimes import food, liquor, clothes, and booze from the US for personal use to evade Canuck VAT. Property taxes are high and property values are very over-inflated. We'd like to buy a house in Canada for my MIL and FIL, but it's been a couple years now and the housing prices are still very high.

Today at my work some piece of shit with a Quebec liscence plate was parked on the crosswalk in front of the store and was making it hard for old people to get in and out of the store.
