For my favorite movie ever, its underrated sequel, and its great third installment (Ghostbusters: The Video Game).

Ghostbusters is a great standalone movie that mistakenly got turned into a franchise.
It doesn't work as a franchise, it never did.
A lot of people rightfully call this movie "lightning in a bottle" because it can never be repeated.
Everything that came after the original has ranged from underwhelming to outright abysmal.

Aside from the films, I also really enjoyed the two animated series they made (The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters). I watched the newest film, and while it wasn't as awful as the 2016 one it still wasn't very good.
The newest one just feels meh as fuck and the less said about the 2016 abomination, the better. This franchise really should have just ended in the 2000s with the game as that felt like the ending to a trilogy.

Ghostbusters II (1989) has aged well at the least from being a product of its time.

I agree Ghostbusters is a standalone film that got turned into a franchise - like Jurassic Park if anything - but its sequel and the cartoons were legitimately charming and the Vidya an excellent nostalgic capstone. I admit I laughed at IDW comics' reference to the Rookie player character when Peter asks how "Rookie"'s doing only for Ray to retort that Rookie's franchise was more profitable than theirs. That's how you do one-off references right!

I also think Ghostbusters got truly lucky surviving the culture wars and Sony's attempts to turn it into an endless franchise. Yes, really! For all the damage Girlbusters did to the brand... the original movie has truly stood the test of time and sequel media from its time period is still remembered fondly. Thus, Girlbusters can be written off as a failed revival attempt, already all but forgotten, and the current set of sequels the same if it comes to. Not many media franchises get such a strong core set of media to fall back upon whenever it's time to dust them off for another shot.

Finally saw a good chunk of the 2016 movie. Not proactively. It was just playing where I was at but I wanted to be openminded.

TLDR, it wasn't good but if you come at it with no preconceptions. Not even justified ones by not knowing its history, its not as offensive or boring as some other movies and shows I've seen. Its just generic boring run of the mill sci fi and depending on your tolerance of women like whats her face McCarthy its annoying to varying levels. I'm putting my thoughts so those of you who are curious for some reason don't have to see it.

None of the four main characters are as interesting as their original counterparts. Nor do they come across as scientists like the originals did. They're basically 'normal' Marvel characters who might as well be working at a Wendy's but are inexplicably scientists.

In place of the original dynamic where you had Venkman, Egon, and the black guy play straightmen in different ways you have one completely traditional serious straight wo(man) in femVenkman. Unlike the original they even try to have serious vulnerable character moments.

femEgon and femRay are discount quirky marvel characters. FemEgon (McCarthy) is your typical annoying female comedian personality. Your perception of the movie is going to be based in large part on how much you can tolerate her. I didn't overthink it too much so I wasn't that bothered.

femblack guy is a stereotypical loud sassy black woman who like original black guy was the less educated more street smart member.

The film is mostly a shittier retread of the original just with the details changed out. I guess what qualities the movie has could be due to this...

Most of the humor doesn't land but is okay background noise. I chuckled a few of the jokes.

Bill Murray has a wasted cameo role. Somewhere along the line he forgot he's best in roles with a touch of straight man and went full comedic which doesn't suit him as much.

One new dynamic that the film brings is that femVenkman has the hots for manJenine. She and I'm not shitting you actually drinks his spit in one scene. *spoilers* Really I think they should have made the movie about her obession with him. It would have been much more interesting.

Some of the music is not bad.

Tenma San Ga Yuku was Sony's stealth test of Ghostbusters But Local Region concept that went nowhere
it's not bad
