Mithraism was a mystery religion that flourished in the Roman Empire from the 1st to the 4th century CE, centered on the worship of Mithras—a divine figure associated with cosmic order, light, and the unconquered sun. Practiced mainly by soldiers and merchants, it took place in underground temples called mithraea, where initiates underwent secret rites and participated in communal meals beneath images of Mithras slaying the cosmic bull, a symbolic act believed to renew the world and sustain life. Unlike public Roman cults, Mithraism emphasized personal spiritual ascent through seven ranks of initiation, each tied to a planet and its virtues, creating a path of inner transformation rather than public ritual. Though eventually eclipsed by Christianity, remnants of the cult’s iconography and ritual structure reveal a religion focused on brotherhood, discipline, and the soul’s passage toward divine light.
