Most Canadians believe that Canada should consider joining the European Union. Would that even be possible? And what would it look like?
When Finnish president Alexander Stubb visited Canada last week, he drew media attention mainly by playing ice hockey with Canadian prime minister Mark Carney.
“I think Finns and Canadians are quite similar,” he said. “We are calm, reasonable and even-tempered — except on the hockey rink. And when things get tense, we go to the sauna, take an ice bath and calm down,” Stubb said in an interview with CBC News.
The two centrist liberals are linked not only by their fondness for winter sports. They are also moving closer together on the global stage — given their unpredictable neighbours in the form of Russia and the United States, as well as US president Donald Trump and his disruption of the world order.
Trump’s verbal attacks and threats to annex Canada as the 51st US state have pushed Canadian public opinion and politicians more towards Europe.
“I think that in its overall character and fundamental values, Canada is so close to the European Union that the least we can do is create a very close strategic partnership,” Stubb said.
What used to be seen as a half-joking remark is becoming an increasingly serious topic of debate. The Finnish president also considers Canada a country that could one day become part of the European Union.
“I can imagine a much larger EU; whether Canada will be part of it is up to Canada to decide,” Stubb added.
How realistic would such a move be?

What the polls show

Canadian prime minister Mark Carney studied at Oxford, worked in London and speaks fluent French, although critics point to his strong accent.
Carney sees Europe as a model, and that is not only because of the rhetoric of US president Donald Trump, who also attacked him over his speech in Davos.
After being elected Canadian prime minister, Carney made his first foreign trips not on the American continent, but to the other side of the Atlantic.
According to him, Canada is “the most European of all non-European countries”, as he said in Paris and London.
The idea of closer ties between Ottawa and Brussels first appeared last year in the British weekly The Economist and has been gaining popularity since.
“It is a joke that has been around for a long time, but it was never a serious proposal. It has, however, become a real possibility as a result of Donald Trump’s election and the threat he addressed to Canada in a very explicit way,” Frédéric Mérand from the Department of Political Science at the University of Montreal said for Quebec daily Le Devoir.
On 11 March, MEPs adopted a report which, “in the context of global upheavals”, called for closer cooperation between the EU and Canada through full implementation of their security and defence partnership and by speeding up ratification of their Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
Five days later, French foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot hinted that Canada could “at some point” join the EU.
On the same day, Finnish president Alexander Stubb, while out running, urged Canadian prime minister Mark Carney to “think about” joining the EU.
Polls show that Canadians would not be opposed.

I like how everyone somehow is under the impression that the reason Canadump/Europe/Dollarsphere/(fill in the blank for whatever story du jour about x 'cutting off' the us) is so reliant on America is because once upon a time they loved us so much they decided to do us a favor by tying the vast majority of their trade to ours. And they could just pack up and leave anytime they want.
Pretty much every location they could put a big commercial port has one. They just don't have capacity for much more international trade. They US trade is because they don't have much alternative as much as their current crop of commies wants to imagine they do.

Reminder: Canada and the EU started negotiating their FTA in 2009 and as of 2026 the deal is still not fully ratified.

There's basically too many pillars of the Canadian economy that simply wouldn't work under the EU. Too many preexisting migrants at a time when the EU is trying to lower the temp on immigration, too much real estate fuckery (transitioning to the Eurozone would almost certainly implode Canadian real estate and impoverish the moneyed elites of the country), and too much indigenous rights baggage.

This is more Syrupean tantrum-throwing because they're mad about murica.

Why would you willingly tie yourselves to a legislative power an ocean away? Do they miss the crown that much that they are willing to settle with Belgian bureaucrats to fill the void?
Probably, yeah. The Irish are some of the biggest fans of the EU out there. You'd think after being stepped on by the English for so long they'd hate and resent foreign rule, but it seems like they crave the boot on their necks so long as it isn't an English one.
It's insane Canada is third of a continent and has a worse economy than fucking Italy. Like what the fuck are they doing?
They've got over 17 million fewer people living there, that's why, even though each person is on average much more economically productive.

The real question you should be asking is why Italy is so fucking poor despite having a position perfectly suited to dominating international trade into and out of Southern Europe thanks to being halfway between the Suez and Gibraltar.

Italy is a snake eating itself. The government taxes so much that tax evasion is the norm. If they even tried to crack down on it they would implode the economy completely. Country's been fucked since WWII.

Taxing the shit out of their people is how European governments roll. The Italians are just the only ones who have no problems telling the tax man to fuck himself. Doesn't change the rest of their problems, like general corruption, a culture of laziness, and the fact the 'Ndrangheta runs the southern half of the country.

EU wants what's left of their money, and probably resources

Canada wants their brown people no questions asked

Oddly a mutually beneficial relationship

The EU dragged ireland from a bogger country into the 21st century. Countries like france/germany (etc) are huge contributors but ireland received a lot of funding for infrastructure and projects early on - it made out like copper thieves. It's still difficult to drive around without passing a sign saying something like "this road was made possible due to funding by the EU" etc.
I don't think there's any shame in that, ireland wouldn't be the country it is today without all that funding. We'd just came out of the troubles when it started and the EU stood firm with the backstop in ireland when england was leaving. I don't think any other country has come out better than ireland really.

There's lots of things to criticise the EU for, horrific immigration problems, years of red tape to get anything done and a myriad of other things but there's many good reasons that ireland has a 90% (or something like that) positive view of the EU.

That aside, canada joining the EU is a cope and a pretty hilarious one at that. Just assimilate into the US already and get it over with.

How does Canada's First Nations indigenous peoples feel about joining EU?

As long as the government promises to keep giving money that the Tribal chiefs embezzle to buy Hummers and $5,000 suits instead of focusing on actually helping their people and gaslight them into believing their reserves and social safety nets are in such a horrible state is because Canada isn't giving enough money they probably won't care...well at least the ones dumb enough to fall for that. Many natives on reserves and stuff are furious with their tribal leaders.
