There's an entire streaming site for North Korean music. It's run by a pro-DPRK society in Poland, so they have access to a lot of rare stuff.

Here's some rare Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble instrumental tracks - it turns out karaoke is quite popular in North Korea. There's not much information on exact release years for these songs, but most of them are probably from around 1990-1995.

A lot of it has a nice "ethereal" quality to it.

It was written around 1991 after the collapse of the USSR (and with it, the majority of foreign aid to the DPRK). The lyrics are about maintaining the ideology of the DPRK in the face of the decline of socialist governments around the world at the time.

There's a strangely nostalgic quality to it, which is strange because it comes from a world you would feel zero nostalgia towards.

I dunno about pop music specifically, but someone from here turned me on to that guy that rips NK broadcasts and uploads them back when I was still lurking and it's a great channel. I watched one recently that was all cartoons and for some unknown reason it was all stop motion. I had a lot of fun MST3K riffing off of it since I only know a smidgen of Korean. Whatever farmer it was that posted his channel back in the MATI thread a year or two back
