On top of that, the US has (had) been operating under the Wolfowitz doctrine of suppressing the strength of nominal allies by providing for their security, foreign meddling, etc. for many, many years now. 'The Wolfowitz doctrine' is the name given to it formally after the leaked memo in the 90s, but the US's foreign policy has been fairly consistent since the Nixon era, until Trump, and America's allies and foes have had a lot of time to adapt to it. There are many advantages to breaking with the traditional foreign policy of the US.
