And what's with the constant Xena referencing? It's fucking Xena and the actress they used was mid as hell. It is not an example of someone doing race swapping right. If Cleopatra 2525 had a black George Washington would you be holding that up as an example for modern films to aspire to?

Ended up listening to EFAP on 1.5x while at work, and it made me realize how little I actually retained of the dialogue (and thus the plot). I suppose that will have to be added into my willingness to say the bootleg tarnished (to a degree) what worth the film might've had, had I seen it in theater or at least in a less muddy format.

That said, I don't think this helps the clarity of the plot being a mess, even if I was slightly less able to understand because of the bootleg making dialogue harder to make out. The plot still, even when explained by people who literally made a job out of being nitpicky about details, can't pick out a proper throughline with most scenes or characters between those scenes.

I will say, they tended to have the same view on it before the podcast (mid movie, not a good Nolan film, probably on par with what was expected based on the shit around the film) that I did. Makes me feel a bit more sane with how delusional the takes google was feeding me in my news app (that I was surfing cause KF wasn't working)

I am surprised as I didn't enjoy it myself but maybe I went into it prejudiced? Still, odd to see pretty much everyone praising it as "truly great Nolan movie" as good as or even better then Oppenheimer.

It's interesting because the complaints I do hear from the people who think it was middling or even bad, are all the same and based on what I felt was bad. Means that, at least when going on the technical of the filming/editing/writing I'm not crazy, but perhaps more analytical than the average viewer. I haven't even seen a Nolan film in years so I can't say I went into it with any expectations outside of the cast, so hard to say it's a real bias or anything

When Telemachus goes to Sparta to meet with Menelaus, it's shown that the left half of Helen's face has been scarred as punishment for leaving with Paris, following the idea that she willingly left for Troy and was not kidnapped. When Telemachus goes to leave for Ithaca, she embraces him and sobs that she's sorry for all she has done to his family.

Clytemnestra only shows up in flashbacks from Agamemnon's memories. I don't recall any obvious red tapestry during the scene.

Nolan didn't want a movie set in ancient Greece so why didn't he just set it in the present day or space or something?

MGM got away with retelling The Tempest in space in the 50s. Disney made Hamlet in Africa with animals in the 90s. Why didn't Nolan do something like that?

That's how you can make Simba a sunny character instead of a brooding emo schemer, cause he isn't being compared to Hamlet. Odyssey absolutely invites comparison from other Homeric productions and immediately shows how it doesn't belong.

Forbidden Planet was one of my favorite films as a kid, I rented the VHS every time my family went to the rental store, I remember it came in this giant box for some reason. Anyway MGM had the faith to let it stand on its own and it did and latter when I figured out it was a retelling of The Tempest(Thanks Wishbone) that was the first play from Shakespeare I read and now I love them both. So it really puzzles me why Nolan didn't just do a modern day retelling and call it something else.

Here's the thing, even if it turns out to be a big opening weekend for the film (and no one was attesting this because of branding), it's not going to break even should it lose steam its second weekend. Having a "great turn-out" for its opening weekend doesn't mean jackshit should it lose the studio money at the end of its run. Pyrrhic victory is looking likely.
