When this movie was greenlit USAID was still around and pushing the "Message" all over the place, I do wonder if the casting in the result of some tax dollars being used to fund the movie and that is why they are spending money so freely to promote it and don't seem to care what it makes.

That's really plausible, but Nolan.. It's crazy after $1b win and lots of others he'd need the USAID grift. But maybe they do.. My hopeful thought is he just wants more Oscars and maybe it'll turn out good.

When stood next to Xena she doesn't look out of place besides maybe the hair and looks closer to a Greek than Helen of Vantablack ever would. I've seen leftists haul this out as an own completely missing the point as they are so fond of doing.

As to everything else, I expect any whimsical and supernatural elements to be sucked dry by Nolan to prop up Penelope and shit on Odysseus. They say the last bit is the pay off so he'll have some stupid framing twist or an equivalent I'd wager.

She does come across as reaching that suspension of disbelief since she’s light-skinned enough anyway, especially with the framing and shadows.

Hercules loses an arm wrestling match to a woman. And is made fun of for being a doofus male. And yet... Does this have the same vibe as modern Woke?

People have this jaded idea of what “woke” is. I define it as leftist politics implemented in a piece of work put in at the expense of the story, setting or characters. Think Dragon Age: Veilguard or something like that.

The scene with Sorbo is in line with his characterization. I can believe a doofus male of the writing is good enough. But it’s not written in a way to undermine him. I mean, manly men like tits. They like hot steaming tits. And they like them on an attractive woman who could pull their own.

Xena's intro alone is more appealing than what I've seen so far. You feel the immersion into some "epic" magical world.

How is possible that this old show has more accurate costumes and sets than whatever Nolan is doing?

Xena had the sense to cast beautiful women though. Every lady in it is like an 8 at least. When Anne Hathaway is still the prettiest member of the cast, that's a problem.

Lucy Lawless wasn't just beautiful, she was also quite sexy, even when she was kicking ass.

Homer doesn't actually describe what shooting through axes means, so it's open to interpretation, hence all the different versions of this challenge in the many adaptations.

The Hallmark version of this is amazing. The way in which the camera sees through the axes...

We were discussing how crazy it is that Universal makes the Hercules tv movies so hard to find. There were five of them I think, with Xena being introduced as a villain in one of the middle ones. You would think they'd include them in the series box set but whatever. Tek War, Rising Son, Bandit, and the Midnight Run sequels deserve some love too.

Troy happened during the gritty reboot era where anything that wasn't played straight got laughed at. Look at X-Men with the awful black leather outfits and Batman Begins with a Batman who can't kick higher than his knee and lives in Chicago. That said, Troy's a pretty entertaining movie and I can't imagine it would be better with a bunch of gay wizards zipping around impregnating horses while disguised as apples and whatnot. It also had the good sense to call itself Troy instead of the The Iliad, and didn't have fucking Jay Z as a shucking, jiving bard who raps over the end credits.

The gods in the Iliad were either fighting or playing politics. Nothing too unfitting for a war movie.

As it turns out, all the internet rumors that had been swirling for months about Christopher Nolan’s stupid, anachronistic, immersion-compromising, and virtue-signaling decision to cast an African lady to portray Helen of Troy in his newest film, The Odyssey, turned out to be true.

There is obviously nothing in the classical literary record, which prominently includes The Odyssey, suggesting that Helen of Troy is actually an African woman. But, hey, Nolan made a creative choice. It’s arguably a dumb and unnecessarily distracting choice, as many have argued, but casting a pretty black actress to play Helen of Troy doesn’t diminish the character or her role in the greater narrative of this particular story.

But, as it turns out, Nolan makes different creative decisions that effectively diminish not only Helen’s character in the story, but also the narrative purpose of two other women who are vital to the central story of The Odyssey.

Nolan, you see, expects us to believe that there were two prominent African ladies in ancient Homeric Greece, who married two of the most prominent sibling kings in ancient Greece. Not only is actress Lupita Nyong’o playing Helen of Troy, married to the Spartan king named Menalaus, but she’s also playing her sister, Clytemnestra, who is the wife of the legendary Greek King of Mycenae who led the siege of Troy, Agamemnon.

It's not merely that she's African. She's Sub-Saharan African.

Herodotus has to write what Sub-Saharan Africans were like in books for the other Greeks, when he referred to "people with hair like the wool of a sheep" and other traits. And that was much later than Myceanean Greek.

The article is correct but gives too much ground in its "I am going to concede your premise to seem reasonable and disagree on the details" debate tactic. It's gone wrong long before it casts her in the second role already.

As far as the box office goes, I think that the movie will have a lot of an audience but not enough to be a success. Nolan is good with budgets but this is an epic. Epics are expensive. Lots of costumes, sets and CGI effects have to be made. Add the reshoots, rewrites as well as everything else and you get something that is bound to be expensive. And the theaters have to get a cut too. The right wing and centrist people won't watch it. Nolan's films made their budget back by good word of mouth and by appealing to everyone as well as by making sure things were as cheap as possible without compromising in quality. This time the word is that the movie shits on the source material as well as the people it was made by, the people working on it are alienating everyone but the left and it is adapting a script that requires a ton of expensive things to film.

I love this film and Harryhausen's fantasy work in general but this cyclops looks like something out of DnD. I like the creatures found in other Odyssey adaptations from this decade, brought to life by a large, hirsute actor and make up a tad more.

That mildly entertaining Conan series did this even better if you ask me. That show and Sinbad used to be my jam. I also remember a Robin Hood and a Beastmaster series and something Celtic themed with Heath Ledger. The point is that no smart person watched the adventures of Xena for any sort of accuracy. The two leads met Julius Caesar, Hector, Eric the Red and baby Jesus in the same season.

We really didn't know how good we had it in the 90's. No need for special effects, just good writing and actors who knew they were making a cheesy show and delivered the cheddar with deadpan seriousness.

I cannot stress enough for our zoomer frens how good the Xena and Hercules shows are. Are they pure cheese? Yes. Absolutely. But in a good way that you can forgive it, and you would be truly cheesed to watch it.
