UN Nobel Peace Prize goes to anti-war rape activists - Sorry Donald, maybe next year.

The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to campaigners against rape in warfare Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege.

Ms Murad is a Yazidi woman who was tortured and raped by Islamic State militants and later became the face of a campaign to free the Yazidi people.

Mr Mukwege is a Congolese gynaecologist who, along with his colleagues, has treated tens of thousands of victims.

Some 331 individuals and organisations were nominated for the prestigious peace award this year.

The winners announced in the Norwegian capital Oslo on Friday won the award for their "efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war", Berit Reiss-Andersen, the Nobel committee chair, said.

The pair both made a "crucial contribution to focusing attention on, and combating, such war crimes," Ms Reiss-Andersen added.

Mr Mukwege and his colleagues in DR Congo are said to have treated about 30,000 rape victims, developing great expertise in the treatment of serious sexual injuries, many in instances of war.

Ms Murad became an activist for the Yazidi people after escaping IS in November 2014, campaigning to help put an end to human trafficking.

BBC Persian's Nafiseh Kohnavard, who met Ms Murad after she had escaped from her Islamic State group captors, tweeted an image of the meeting after the prize was announced.

I met Nadia Murad just the day after she managed to escape from #Mosul. I told her we can film the interview anonymously but she refused, “No let the world see what happened to us” she said ... She is now a noble peace prize winner. #Yazidi #Izadi #NadiaMurad

Earlier this week the Nobel prize for physics was awarded to Donna Strickland, only the third woman winner of the award and the first in 55 years. The Canadian was announced along with Arthur Ashkin, from the US, and Gerard Mourou, from France.

The Nobel prize for medicine was awarded to two scientists - Professor James P Allison from the US and Professor Tasuku Honjo from Japan - who discovered how to fight cancer using the body's immune system.

Eh, I can't be mad at this, rape in warfare is a terrible thing, plus the Korean Peninsula is not quite solved yet.

Plus they actually did something.

Totally agree. They've done more for peace than Trump has at this point.

Trump forfeited any claim he had on a peace prize when he cucked out and dropped bombs on Syria bc Hillary Clinton and her military industrial complex buddies were mad that Russia was actually fixing ISIS so they can't keep profiting off it. He could sign a deal that amicably makes North Korea the 51st state and then he can turn around and still go fuck himself if he thinks he deserves a peace prize.

But you've got to admit that he'd still deserve one over Obama.

Trump could personally delegate the dissolution of the border between North and South Korea and wouldn't win. It would take an immense amount of moral courage, the kind that seemingly doesn't exist anywhere in the West anymore, to pull off something like that. They'd give it to Kim Jong-Un before Donald Trump.

Anyway, good for those winners. Sounds like a legitimately good cause and I wish them all the best in their efforts. At least it wasn't a repeat of the White Helmets thing...

Nothing against Norway, but the Peace Prize is awarded by a country which doesn't seem to have distinguished itself in any sort of peace process. It's as credible as a theoretical physics award issued by my uncle the auto mechanic.

That said, this seems to be a good choice and best of luck to them.

You know what I would love? Once, just once, for someone to decline the Nobel Prize/Nebula/Oscar. Just have them come up and say "thanks for the award but we really don't consider it to be worth much anymore so we're going to decline" just to see the reaction it would cause. A prize is really only as valuable as people think it's so not only would it be a huge middle-finger to the award givers, but all subsequent winners. I doubt it'll ever happen, but whatever.

The title led me to believe the recipients were anti-war but promoting rape through activism.
Yeah, this one was disappointing.
Everyone knows the Nobel Peace Prize is just a participation medal for people too dumb to win the actual Nobel Prizes, anyway.
It's always a bit strange because there's a ton of golds but only one silver and one bronze.
The Afterparty circa 2016:
So what did you guys do? We made Nanomachines real.
My research brought us a few steps closer to overcoming mortality and/or cancer.
We worked to manipulate matter most humans have never seen or imagined.
I got myself elected and tried to stay that way.

That female Nobel winner made a mistake when she got gang raped by Muslims 4 years ago. If she had gotten sorta raped by a white guy 40 years ago, the liberals would’ve pretended to care about her a lot more.

Good for them.

It's good they didn't give it to a literal terrorist for once.

Última edición:
They would have given the prize to Moon and Un before Trump, even though he deserves it for his significant involvement orchestrating peace talks more than Clinton or Carter ever did in the Middle East between two terrorists each.

Somebody just has to cancel out Obama's prize.
