No private tags for articles outside A&N?

@Null I thought it was a rule that article copies outside of A&N require private tags to protect against copyright complaints. Is that not true?

Articles are occasionally posted in threads outside of A&N when they're relevant. Here's an example post of mine. I put the archive links outside of the private tags so guests can still read them. I considered it more appropriate to post these articles in her thread because it's relevant to her and didn't consider them entertaining enough to deserve standalone A&N submissions.

It was put into place because copy/pasting large segments of text that appeared on other websites was messing with the ranking in Google searches, iirc.

Does anyone still care? I'm guessing the site has other way bigger SEO problems now, plus SEO best practices change constantly. When I see article text pasted outside A&N without private tags, I report and I guess a mod comes by and adds the tags. I'm wondering if I should bother.

Your post in the thread Gretchen Felker-Martin / Micah Elliott Martin / scumbelievable / nonameinanytongue was edited. Reason: Inappropriate use of private tags.

I've used it for links to sites that are clearly for copyright infringement. Even though linking to something shouldn't be a problem, maybe it would trigger a DMCA takedown request against the post.

It's also strange that A&N has been made available to visitors who aren't logged in (a few months ago). What is the policy in 2025?
