Star Fox Zero probably would have been (slightly) better received had the Wii had a traditional Star Fox game. If that had been the case, Zero would have been brushed off as a Wii U experiment. But Zero was the first new Star Fox game since Star Fox Command, which also had a gimmicky control scheme. Hell, even if the Wii had a Star Fox game, it probably would have been a motion controlled mess. People would be a little more open to these experiments if the series also had more traditional entries.

Fact of the matter is, Star Fox wasn't brought back out of a desire to do good with a dormant series, or even to milk it.
It was brought back because it was the closest IP to fit with Miyamoto's fever dream of a vision.

It happened because Miyamoto crashed his car while trying to see out of all the mirrors at once and he thought it would make an excellent flying game.

At this point I'll take another remake of Star Fox. I wouldn't even be mad.
Star Fox Assault wanted badly to be a decent game but they wanted to do everything to keep Star Fox out of his star ship.

At least Star Fox Assault was trying to push the series forward, without relying on gimmicks, and had traditional Star Fox gameplay. It had direction and vision behind it, while Star Fox Zero had none.
