I kind of hope out of all the pokemon clones that are coming out, one winds up giving it a black eye. I mean if world of warcraft can be brought down due to stagnation and mismanagement, so can pokemon. I mean it's as you said they're pandering to all the old shit but not letting the new stuff time to breathe.

They both have a part in it because it's all about the quarterly earnings. You can't release new merch for a game that isn't out.

The biggest thing a hypothetical "Pokemon Killer" would REALLY need to reach more than a niche audience of mongame fans is a large line-up of likable and, more importantly, iconic designs. In most non-Pokemon mongames, for every really great design there is like 20 bad designs. There is a reason why Pokemon has an entire roundtable of people to go over and approved Pokemon designs instead of either leaving it to one person decide everything or having a free-for-all of a bunch of different people making their own designs independently(Indy mongames suffer from the latter a lot, causing many critters to look like they are from entirely different series from one another.)

Temtem tried to copy Pokemon beat-for-beat mechanically, but it really says something that the only design people liked was a literally a fakemon made for a convincing false game leak that they bought the rights to from the artist.

It may take a bit, but monster games seem to be in a better place than they once were.

I mean the french attempt at pokemon seems to be on a better ground than temtem.

Pokemon for a while has been at a point where they continue to make "questionable" choices that ACTUAL fans call them out for, but everyone else keeps praising and supporting, which is why even after the garbage fire that was Sword and Shield it still sold a fuck-ton of copies. Legends: Arceus will probably sell well too, because fuck standards I guess.

The delusion in our own Pokemon thread demonstrates the power Pokemon has. That shit is sold out everywhere and the game is a mess.
 
You cannot seriously look at diamond/pearl on the switch and honestly, with a straight face, declare "yes, this is definitely a next-gen experience, I will definitely buy this game twice over"
 
Pokemon Legends Arceus is definitely a step in the right direction, unfortunately said step came 15 years too late, is plastered with the crap from previous steps and can barely stand up without the support of handrails.
One of the most positive things about PL:A is that after 10 main installments and 5 remakes, the mainline series is finally releasing a game with a single version.
 
Looks like the based Italians gave the new Pokemon game a 5/10. Big if true.

I think @Marissa Moira's comparison to Dragon Quest is excellent. Here you have two series that more or less release a remix of the same game over and over again. But while Pokemon remains largely stagnant, Dragon Quest always finds ways to push the envelope and make the games feel new and interesting.

In the pursuit of a game to scratch that monster-catching itch, I was told by a couple people to play Inazuma Eleven. I was very skeptical considering it is a football jrpg; but past that shell is basically a monster-catching game with a vastly superior training and move system than anything Pokemon has ever mustered. It's really good. There are no monsters, just middle school students. But it is exactly the same sort of experience at a conceptual level and a very good experience at that. One of my favorite parts of Inazuma Eleven is that your players' moves level up the more you use them. Yes you may want to swap a move out every now and again if you find a better training manual. But if you are patient and can find ways to regularly use a move in your team strategy, suddenly your early-game move levels up and becomes much more useful even against late-game moves.


Check these games out. They're on the DS and 3DS and Wii and there is a new one in production for the Switch that thankfully ended up getting delayed a couple years ago and should be out end of 2022 or early 2023. It is looking much better, which is good because the Inazuma Eleven series deserves more praise.

You're being way to hopeful for the other monster catching games. It's nice to have alternatives, but the only way they could completely replace Pokemon is if that series died. It's like smash bros and the other platform fighters, it's too big to have any serious competition. The best they could achieve is being a popular side pick.

Take a look at Pokemon Legends arceus. There's gameplay videos and such of it everywhere.

To sum it up though: Game Freak changed up the game this time around, but some people don't think it's good enough.

They consider rolling a brave new mechanic and the fact that you can die in real time means Arceus is a better example of the Soulsborne genre than Elden Ring.

There's no helping these people, they'd damn all of humanity to hell for eternity if it means another trip to KAAAAAAAAAAANNTTOOOOOOOOOOO

That's because it's not good enough.

@NerdShamer They made an open world game and modified the combat to accommodate that open world. But all of the old problems like antiquated combat design still persist and you have a bunch of new ones like broken turn priorities in combat and terrible textures and meshes. Like really bad and you can't blame Switch hardware because other similarly scaled games look better. I played up to the volcano area on the leaked version and put the game down. Totally not worth the money and Game Freak is going to learn nothing because this game is slated to sell a trillion copies.

Running around the open world is kind of cool but it feels like a beta and the whole thing lacks polish. This series sells like a Nintendo game but it is very clearly not a Nintendo game. I do not think this can be fixed with patches.

I mean, in this instance, that would be a good thing. More games like PLA would mean they'd be able to further flesh it out in the next entry if this does become a series (assuming they don't do DLC for this one).

Honestly @NerdShamer, if you're interested, I suggest you emulate the game and tell us what you think. It's not perfect, but it's definitely the first time in a while pokemon has gotten interesting.
 
Looking through some random streams, it feels like an Monster Hunter game that occasionally pits you against several wild mons at once. Can't really say much about the environment, but it feels more bland than the first party stuff.

Well, it looks "good," if you don't obsess over the graphics. But at around 8 minutes in, it's just going through the motions.

And I find it funny that everything is named after Team Galactic.
