Just for the sake of comparison here, we went from this:
and later this:
and just a month ago, this design from the Mario Galaxy movie:
to now this:
The scruff around his neck gives his face a more "aged" almost fat-looking appearance, and that in combination with the more animal-like features (and some of the more lackluster delivery with the dialogue) makes Fox look bored. This design just doesn't match the same energy of the original "cocky, adventure-loving flyboy mercenary" the older design gave off. I'm also sure they'll "tone down the dialogue for this remake as well. We won't get lines like "cocky little freaks" or Pigma taunting Fox with "Daddy screamed real good when he DIED!"
Hell, we know that isn't even true because we LITERALLY SEE that fateful betrayal in the prologue of this remake, instead of it being a quick, poignant detail in that serious opening monologue delivered by Ja Green (same voice actor for Leon) that was so obviously referential to the Star Wars opening crawl sequences. I feel like it just detracts from the experience when they just show you a rushed betrayal sequence; kind of feels like they just animated it for the sake of having it in the remake. Also the new Pigma reminds me unfortunately of the fat pig voiced by Seth Rogan in that God-awful new
Animal Farm animated movie, which is unfortunate timing. The less said about the furry mocap avatars, the better. Apparently there are unlockable accessories you can overlay over your webcam feed, like Falco's beak over your mouth? Christ, just manufacturing another generation of furries at this rate.
I can maybe see some longevity in this game if they bother to add a few more modes/levels for the multi-player aspect. Dogfighting against other people takes me back to the
Star Fox Assault multiplayer, which I enjoyed a lot with my friends. Currently the game is listed as $50 digital on Nintendo's website, so I guess we should be lucky it wasn't $70. To any F-Zero fans still holding out hope: be grateful this hasn't happened to you. Better your franchise end on a high note than get rebooted as "Unreal Engine 5, realistic fur and slime texture furry abomination". I'm debating whether or not this puts Star Fox as lower than Sonic at this point; maybe that's a bit too harsh?
