Well this wasn't taken from a trash bin, this was taken from a Nintendo server, they held onto it forever (until two years ago, I bet they took it all down as soon as they realized they were compromised.)

I'm still kinda upset about that. Even if they lost/threw away the source code of the first two Panzer Dragoon games, it would be alright since they are simple enough to make just from the standpoint of both mechanics and models. Panzer Dragoon Saga and Orta will never have that luxury and they are the best games in the series. I really do wish Japanese people had a sense of preservation of delicate things. I get that it's typical office room bullshit about saving space and reusing unused materials, but even the guys that lost the Blade Runner source code during a move at lest made the game playable on modern systems via ScummVM.

Its possible someone in Japan dug it out of the trash and is hording it. I think Square lost the source code to FFVII as well. I'm surprised Nintendo held on to the source code for this long.

Yeah, I wrote up a little decoder for this but so far the results seem to be nonsense. The subject lines seem to indicate that these would often be LZH files as attachments, but what I get out isn't an LZH or anything else I can identify.

Yeah, why did they hold onto the source code for demos and all these older SNES games for so long? If they wanted to re-release them, they're 2D. They could have made them from the ground up with less hassle than 3D games from the N64 era onward. Did they just forget that they existed?

Well all we know is that at least a large part of it came from the fellow I knew, ryanrocks462, however this material was passed from him to a third party at some point.

I also don't consider him a "friend" because as soon as I became aware of his predilections I told him that someday he would get what was coming to him and cut all ties. I didn't participate in ratting on him, but I knew several people who did in order to avoid coming under scrutiny themselves.

He's also not in prison yet, because his sentencing was postponed due to corona. Last I checked he was still under house arrest/bail.

Wack0 distributed what he had to different groups so it's possible El Pedofil could have been one of those people, there's like a giant autistic drama saga about these people who got what he leaked and kept sitting on them + autistic slapfights.

Not to make fun of the incident too much but somehow I feel like leaving him at home is just going to cause another cycle of hacking into servers > get caught > more cheese pizza is found kek
 
By the way, you all might want to look at the Mario All-Stars source code. There's a fully commented version of Mario 1 in there at
other\SFC\ソースデータ\srd13-SFCマリオコレクション\export\mario-z\linkp\mario_n1\
It's still got references to "Copyright 1985" in there; this must have been a very direct port. Lots of old or development names in there too - Bowser is "Big Kame", Goombas are "Walk mush" or "Mush room enemy", etc.

Mario 1 and lost levels had some tweaks done to them. I.e the physics when hitting a block. 2 & 3 are probably direct ports. Hell, 3 still has the original debug mode and all the leftover levels still in there.
