Business Nintendo Announces Sweeping Price Hikes For Switch 2 - And a price hike for Switch Online in Japan

Nintendo has announced that the Switch 2 will be going up in price globally, with Nintendo Switch Online also receiving a price hike in Japan.

Hardware price revisions are effective from 25th May 2026 in Japan and 1st September in Western markets. Nintendo states that the changes are due to "changes in market conditions" and the "global business outlook".

"We sincerely apologize for the impact these price revisions may have on our customers and other stakeholders, and we deeply appreciate your understanding."

The changes affect all Switch models in Japan, but only Switch 2 in the West. So without further ado, here are the hardware pricing changes:

We contacted Nintendo to confirm UK pricing and were told the following:

"The revised price of Nintendo Switch 2 on My Nintendo Store in other European currencies will be shared at a later date."

Here's a look at how much Nintendo Switch Online is going up in Japan, effective from 1st July 2026. Nintendo has also confirmed that changes will soon be applied to South Korea, but it has not provided specific details.

Additionally, prices on Japan-only playing cards and Hanafuda/Kabufuda cards will also increase on 25th May.

So there you have it! We all expected it, and it's safe to say we all feared it, but it will now soon be a reality.

How this will affect Nintendo's sales of the Switch 2 going forward is unclear, but we'll keep an eye on any developments going forward.

It is currently impossible to pirate or emulate Switch 2 games.
There are like ~15 "real" Switch 2 games, and most of them are just re-hashes of Switch/Wii/3DS games.

If you Emulate earlier consoles, you can get everything you get on Switch 2 minus Donkey Kong, Mario Kart World, Pokemon Pokepia and Wheelchair Basketball.

Well Donkey Kong and Pokopia are the two games I bought the Switch 2 for.

Pokopia while not my type of game is one of those that I can't really see being as good pirated. It has updates for new items every few weeks to my understanding and a complete Crack would likely butcher progression.

Most of the always online weird authentication server annoyances won't effect most games. The only thing that interests me in the switch 2 is Kirby air riders but thats more nostalgia then actual want.

It can cost $700 and i'm still not fucking interested. My Switch 1 plays all the games I want perfectly fine, and homebrew shit like the Twilight Princess recomp extends its long life even more. The Switch 2 has FUCKING NOTHING, it's borderline PS5 tier (ok there's that meme kirby game). Fuck, have you seen for how much 3DSes are going right now? They're more expensive than OLED Switches

Nintendo died with Iwata, Reggie leaving was just the lights going out

And that's fine, but the point remains that if you don't like DKC or Pokopia - it's an otherwise pretty easy skip considering it's $449 (now $499) +tax just for the system itself and even easier if you're fine with a Switch 1 library.

What do you mean by "every gaming console is the 3DO"?

Do you mean "everything that requires you to connect to the Internet is some sort of AI-generated marketing prop?"

I think they are referring to the fact that the 3DO was outrageously expensive. It was like $700 at launch. The difference back then was that there was plenty of cheaper competition. Looks like those days are coming to a close. *sigh*

Oh you sweet summer child

Even if Reggie still worked there and maybe if Iwata still lived, It would still be the same outcome.
On the flip side Reggie is the guy that forced the nips to pack in Wii sports. As for Iwata, I remember very vividly how they admitted they fucked up the 3DS launch and made somewhat of amends for that. Not to mention that both of these did not have a drought of crap like the switch 2 has

Nintendo has announced a new 'Choose Your Game' console bundle for the Switch 2, launching at participating retailers in North America in early June for $499.99.

So essentially, you get the Switch 2 console itself plus a download code from a selection of three potential games: Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Pokémon Pokopia. The offer saves you up to $29.99 when compared to purchasing an extra game separately.

Nintendo has not stated for how long the bundle will be available beyond a rather vague "limited time while supplies last", but it's likely to last for the Summer months only given that the Switch 2 on its own will be going up to $499.99 from 1st September 2026.

You probably don't need a reminder, but here's Nintendo's description of each available game:

- Mario Kart World is the biggest Mario Kart game yet! Hit the open road with Mario and friends across a vast interconnected environment, where players can race seamlessly across connected courses that deliver Mario Kart racing like never before. Packed with places to go, races to win and the ability to explore the in-game world at your own pace, Mario Kart World is fast-paced fun (or leisurely exploring) for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

- Donkey Kong Bananza features (literal) ground-breaking exploration as you destroy your way through layer after layer as Donkey Kong and Pauline. With DK’s brute force and Pauline’s special singing abilities, you can crash through walls, carve tunnels with your fists, punch straight down into the ground, and even tear off chunks of terrain to swing around and throw. The more you smash, the more areas open up to explore. Pauline’s singing can also empower Donkey Kong with different Bananza Transformations, each with its own unique power. Join them as they delve deep underground – and discover that this subterranean world is a lot more than it seems on the surface.

- Pokémon Pokopia is a charming life sim where you play as a Ditto who has transformed to look like a human and is trying to restore a withered world using their transformation skills and new crafting abilities. Get nice and cozy while you craft, create, build and befriend a variety of Pokémon in an empty land brimming with promising possibilities.
So if you're concerned about the incoming price hikes, then you might want to take advantage of this bundle when it goes live in early June.

In case you missed it, Nintendo also announced a Pokémon Pokopia bundle for those residing in Australia. This will also launch in June but, as indicated by the name, won't offer the same selection of games, instead limiting it to a download code for Pokopia.

It surprises me the people in charge of making these decisions would raise the prices of the hardware. I thought the business model meta was make the actual hardware price artificially low to hook consumers in and then rake them over the coals financially with the subscription services / DLC. I guess I don't know what the fuck is even going on anymore. The money masters might have actually done it this time and fucked up the flow of raw materials for real. The Switch 2 is locked down as fuck. Nobody is hacking that thing in the next decade, it's guaranteed eshop profit from every Switch 2 sold. Why disincentivize buying it? Doesn't make sense to me.

Nintendo hardware hasn’t operated on a loss since like the N64. There’s a reason why the WiiU didn’t completely tank their hardware department like it would have literally any other corporation.

The same thing happened to the Nintendo Switch around 2018, where buying a new console went beyond my budget so I just had to buy it on Ebay just the tablet and it's accessories. At that time, though, the Switch 1 was already hacked where we had Atmosphere, Reinand, and SXOS available. You could pirate games. By comparison, the Switch 2 is already being hiked in price and we still don't have an exploit. It's so tantalizing because we understand the firmware, but there's just no exploit lol. It's like knowing everything about the inside of a house but not knowing how to get inside. Shit is dire.

The upcoming major pulls of programming autists to the console are going to be Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave, Splatoon Raiders, and Pokemon Winds/Waves. SciresM, dude who started hacking so he could hack Pokemon games and was the guy who built and maintained Atmosphere the custom firmware for Switch 1, recently retired. He and several other developers from the Reswitched Discord group were the only ones really getting into the gutter of Switch 1 hacking.

Many homebrew authors no longer maintain their homebrew after horizon firmware version 19 because of the changes Nintendo allegedly made in preparation for Switch 2. One of the hardest changes have been to memory allowed for system modules, which homebrew relied heavily on. Devs eventually managed to work something out in later releases, but many homebrew programs are unusable on recent firmware releases. The community is just silent. The Switch 2 uses the exact same firmware as Switch 1, no doubt Nintendo pulled no punches in assembling the security of the console. The patch notes of Atmosphere were basically begging for help.

  • Please note: As a result of changes made to nintendo's software in 21.0.0, there is again roughly 10MB less memory available for custom system modules.
    • I am not really sure what can be done about this at this point; if you are a developer with bright ideas, please join the ReSwitched discord or reach out to me (sciresm) personally on discord.
    • If anyone has any bright ideas, perhaps there will be another atmosphère release which improves the memory availability situation for custom system modules, but I cannot actually think of anything viable at the current time.
  • Please note: All homebrew software may need to be re-compiled with the latest libnx (>= 4.10.0), or else it may crash/experience memory corruption.
    • Nintendo broke the userland<->kernel TLS ABI in 21.0.0, by writing to previously reserved space.
    • Homebrew used this reserved space for its TLS slots, which means any homebrew software using TLS slots will experience memory corruption when running under Atmosphere 1.10.0.
    • This doesn't appear to impact everything, but a large portion of tested homebrew crashes (often on exit), and so will need re-compile for the new ABI.
      • For those technically inclined, while TLS slots are rarely used by developers, they're used to implement features like e.g. C++ exceptions under the hood, and so anything using those crashes, etc.
    • To help make this transition easier, hbmenu now shows a warning when selecting homebrew compiled with an older, incompatible ABI version.
      • I apologize for the hassle in general.
      • libnx has been updated so that its reserved space matches Nintendo's now -- this particular issue can never occur again, even if Nintendo touches more reserved space.

It's not all black pills, though. For the last few gens, the primary reason why Nintendo consoles get their first hacks are because of game releases. No games, no autists, no exploits. Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess for the Nintendo Wii brought us the Twilight Hack, Cube Ninja/Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 3DS (and action replay) brought us the Ocarina hack, Wii U hacked via web browser for isfshax, and Switch 1's Nvidia Tegra processor being the achilles heel that allowed recovery mode access and excess payload pushing. At some point, a nonNintendo developer will code stupid shit, it will get past Nintendo, and the hacking will begin.

I thought the business model meta was make the actual hardware price artificially low to hook consumers in and then rake them over the coals financially with the subscription services / DLC.

That was only ever a thing for Playstation, because from the start they knew it would sell gangbusters and with the new disk format could sell games in volume versus the more expensive cartridges.
