I'm not gonna go gay and say I'm an ally or some shit, but I'm an old and I have to say that the whole GD/FnF shit is what really turned me against Tom and made me open to the hypocrisy I've complained about. He really had me convinced NG was some kind of actual community site but the way him, the mods, and the "review crew" have kept GD and FnF content from being featured anywhere (the forums, the monthlies, the front page) has really opened my eyes to how NG is really more like a Steam page than an organic community. I get that some people hate both properties but they're so huge that the lack of them on NG is like how television never shows straight couples. It's astroturfed bullshit.

I can empathize with people who want to move on, or hell, even cringe at some of the stuff they've done. That's human, that's natural. It's the endless self-flagellation and insistence on purification and over-correcting that I just cannot fucking stand. The constant apologies, whining, or destruction of your old self because it no longer fits into the cultural zeitgeist you could have never foreseen 10-20 years into the future.

I think it's that all these people never really had any beliefs to begin with and just wanted to look cool and be accepted socially. The zeitgeist in the 90's and early-mid 2000's was all about being rebellious and edgy, then it did a 180 after that and ever since it's all about being "empathetic" and making sure no one feels bad, so they feel like they have to overcompensate in order to fit in with the current culture again.
Another aspect of it also is that none of these people actually did grow up, and they are once again overcompensating by showing to the world how much they have "learned and grown". Most of these people are in their 30's-40's, have no kids, no long-term romantic relationship, and haven't made it big enough to make a good living off their creative work. If they're still using Newgrounds to this day, this is especially the case. They try playing adult and believe that being a grown-up is disavowing your past and self-flagellating over prior comments. Actual maturity, like you said, involves moving on and being able to laugh at the dumb things you did in the past, but these people never moved on and never matured.
