Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defiantly dismissed genocide accusations against his country with a provocative statement on Sunday. "If we had wanted to commit genocide, it would have taken exactly one afternoon," he told reporters during press conferences in Jerusalem.

Netanyahu also rejected claims that Israel had pursued a starvation policy in Gaza, insisting there had been no deliberate starvation. "If we had wanted starvation, if that had been our policy, 2 million Gazans wouldn't be living today after 20 months," he stated during the press conferences.

Gaza expansion plans​

Netanyahu vowed on Sunday to take control of the remaining parts of Gaza, including large sections of Gaza City and Al-Mawasi, an area designated by Israel as a safe zone but now crammed with displaced Palestinians. The planned offensive is aimed at defeating Hamas but has drawn condemnation from the United Nations, aid agencies and some of Israel's closest allies.

The comments came as an Israeli airstrike killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, 28, and several colleagues outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The Israel Defence Forces claimed al-Sharif was a Hamas operative "posing as a journalist," allegations that Al Jazeera has rejected.

International pressure mounts​

Australia announced plans to recognise a Palestinian state with strict conditions including no Hamas role, demilitarisation, and democratic elections, as the Daily Mail reports. The move represents growing international pressure on Israel alongside Germany's suspension of some arms exports.

Reports emerged of a heated phone call between Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, during which Trump allegedly "cut him off and shouted at him" about Gaza starvation, according to the Independent. Netanyahu's office denied these reports as "fake news."

The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says at least 61,499 people have been killed since Israel's campaign began, figures the United Nations deems credible. Hamas's October 2023 assault on Israel left 1,219 people dead, according to official figures.
