People who say this shit about going out there being a vigilante aren't the type of people do it. It's all just bawbags playing with themselves in their own fantasy. Considering the deliberate lack of a standing army at the time, and the intention (now abandoned) of never having a permanent standing army, the states were expected to provide for their own defense. Thus, every able bodied man was considered part of the militia, and thus "the People" were expected to be armed, and expected to be armed with weapons sufficient to fight foreign armies.

This was expected to serve the collective good, but there is no practical way of protecting the general right of people as a group to arm themselves for their mutual defense without also protecting the individual right to purchase and keep firearms (and any other weapons covered by the Second Amendment which is not really limited to guns).
