Can you even imagine how weird it would look to people of the time if everyone around the Mediterranean sea looked light brown with curly black hair and then inside the exact borders of Egypt everyone is just black?

So, because I am no expert on this alternative history... why do they think Egyptians look so Arab today? Is it supposed to be because White People, or because Islam?
During early medieval times arabs invaded big parts of Mediterranean territories, included Egypt-Libia-Morocco-Tunisy and south parts of Italy/Spain and (I'm pretty sure?) Greece. Which is why all these countries have various degrees of arab ethnic traits and huge arab influence in art.
Before they arrived Mediterraneans were pretty much whites but with strong jaws, dark eyes, big noses, brown/black curly hair and a skin easily prone to tan, cause that's the type of body you need in a warm, can-get-kind-of-cold-in-winter territory.

Not everyone on the Mediterranean looked like that anyway. Things were more diverse when travel was more difficult and several dozen mass invasions from the steppes and desert had yet to occur.
