Dang I was hoping this thread would be more active than it is. What are people's opinions on Serum? Trying to decide if it's worth buying or if I should just keep working in Sytrus. Also looking for a drum pack for progressive house.

Love it. It’s an absolute powerhouse. Most of my projects are just serum 2 and the kiloharts plugins. I Pirated serum 1 for a few years and ended up paying because I was so impressed, and then serum 2 came out and it again gave every other synth a good run for their money.

Serum 2 is a must have imo, you could always try it first by pirating it or giving vital a try (free wavetable synth inspired by serum 1, vital is pretty good).

I think pirating old vengeance sample packs is a good way to start making house stuff

What are some good cheap dj sets? Been enjoying making my first soundcloud tier trash in fl and would like to try the next next into pretending to be interesting.

You mean like the dj decks and dj controllers? Super fun hobby, here’s my opinion.

First you need the vocabulary to figure out what you want:

Dj deck: standalone hardware for playing in clubs and live sets. Does all audio processing onboard. Industry standard. Expensive! Beginners will never buy this basically.

Dj controller: Has all the same buttons, faders, jog wheel, etc, but it hooks up to a computer and lets you do the whole dj thing with your laptop doing all the signal processing stuff. It still has physical outputs such as RCA and headphone monitoring. Cheaper, but other than being bound to a laptop it does more or less the same shit. You’ll want this as a beginner.

Then you choose what software you would want to work with:

Rekordbox: This is the most common and “industry standard” (whatever that means). Updated frequently, supports Spotify, tidal, Soundcloud premium, local media, etc. I’d use this if ur unsure.

Serato DJ: People like this too but I don’t know anything about it.

There’s probs other software but those are the main big two ones for controllers, read up and see what you’d like.

Now you just need to shop around for a controller. Generally, common consensus right now is that FLX4 is the best beginner controller. I have one and I love it. It has absolutely everything you need as a beginner and holds its own as a good controller for putting on shows. It’ll also hardware unlock rekordbox and serato dj lite so you don’t need to pay for software too.

I rate serum but have never gone boots on the ground with it. I’ve seen a mate of mine use it who’s more into EDM music production and he made some pretty interesting stuff.

I did end up buying it about a week ago. The user manual is very dense but it's pretty intuitive once you get the basics. Very versatile synth and definitely challenging my creativity. I enjoy IDM and house so it's a good synth for that I think.

I've played guitar for a long time, but only recently got into music production. My setup is basic, but here it is:

8-string guitar/5-string bass > Focusrite Scarlet > Reaper

Inside Reaper I program drums using EZdrummer, and the guitar tracks go through various NeuralDSP plugins. I'm making a mix of prog metal and '80s shred. I'm hoping to learn to use other software like FL so I can add some variety (synths, etc). Otherwise I may just buy a cheap keyboard and record it live in Reaper.

Reaper is good, since getting rid of my desktop recently I’ve been using it on my steam deck. EZdrummer can sound cool. To make it sound more realistic I usually blast it through a compressor then turn down that channel with a slight distortion and EQ

Anyone here a fan of modular synthesis? I’ve found that I prefer it over using presets/samples of other instruments, given a lot of the creative possibilities it offers. That, and I tend to get option paralysis from all the different kinds of sample packs and virtual instruments there are.

I bought Voltage Modular a while back and I’ve really loved its ease of use and workflow for creating synth and drum patches (though trying to synthesize convincing cymbal sounds is a pain in the ass). Does anyone here use something similar?
