I bought this album not long before my grandmother passed, when I finally had to confront the reality that I would be losing her. The artwork, the music-it was just blackness, despair. It mirrored my state of mind perfectly, this song in particular.
 
I lost a grandparent to dementia pre-COVID. I remember having these two songs stuck in my playlist for a few months after the funeral.


From Sleep Token's debut album "Sundowning." Sundowning syndrome being a form of dementia.


I actually don't like Dayseeker, but the reimagined version of "A Cancer Uncontained" is a rare exception.


And of course, Blackbird is a song I've always played whenever a friend prematurely died of heroin or suicide... which actually happened more than once pre-COVID.

Florence + The Machine, 'The Old Religion'. Florence's most recent album is inspired by her miscarriage that almost killed her, so I suppose the whole album applies. But this song feels like both pain and mourning to me.

Anything fits if it’s yours in some way, shape, or form for mourning, & remembrance. Whether from deep within the sadness & grief, or from a state of celebration of life & happy memories, & for everything in-between. It could even be a song you think is good for any of those purposes, too, or something similar to these thoughts & feelings.

Nothing about the song itself is especially sad, it's more the story of why it matters.

I loved my dad, but we were very different people in a lot of ways. One thing we could never agree on is music. I like European heavy metal, he liked country gospel. Even as an adult, he always asked me to turn off my stuff when we were together. I ran across this song and thought it was okay, and I thought he might like it too. Which he somewhat did.

That was about a week before he got a terminal cancer diagnosis. It was one of the last things we did together before his deathbed.

I think my definition of sad music is pretty much different compared to the average person.

I am completely noob regarding music theory, but how is this type of melody structure\feeling called?
 
I like that this video focuses on primary colors in the background. For anyone who doesn’t know color theory, the primary colors are red, blue, & yellow, which go on to combine into all other colors. Adding white or black also darkens & lightens a color.
 



The best version I have heard in a long time of this very old mourning song.

Now for a personal one.


My mom died from Cancer in 2014. She was pretty much my best friend on top of being my mom. When I was a teenager, we used to go on long drives to our favorite beaches and play music that we both enjoyed while going on the long drives.

When Amber by 311 came out, it was one of the bands we both loved. That day we played it and said it was our Summer song.

She died decades after this, but when I play this song it always takes me back to that nice summer day. I really miss those times now that she's gone. And I never realized how much that one day would impact me this way.

Sometimes I play it when I want to think about that trip.
