Phil Collins is a poor mans Peter Gabriel, change my mind.
Phil and Peter were both in Genesis. IMO, Phil is just a normal pop artist while Peter experimented with World Music and Prog. So is very poppy, but very experimental at the same time.

Not exactly a 'rip off band' but every track on Cage The Elephant's "Thank You, Happy Birthday" (2013) album sounds painfully like the Pixies, right down to the Black Francis impression.

You've heard about singers like Scott Weiland and Scott Stapp (among others) and how they tried very hard to emulate Eddie Vedder's voice and singing techniques.

Yet, in 2007, a new band called Operator debuted with a singer named Johnny Strong who shamelessly copied Chris Cornell's vocals to the point that he sounded more like Cornell than the man himself.

Witness their only radio hit, "Soulcrusher":

Here's some Resurrection Band. They're okay if you wanted 70's and 80's hard rock that wasn't offensive to church ladies.
Skillet started out as a Nirvana rip off.
A decent one, but still.

More treasures from a youth full of this crap. Did you know there was Christian industrial?
Did the fundies like Weird Al? Uh... kinda.

Funny, Skillet went from a Nirana RO to a NIN RO now.

Speaking of NIN RO's, there were a lot of those kinds of rock bands. White Zombie went from not very listenable 1980's noise rock to Rob Zombie's Ministry With Clowns. Rammstein is generic chuggy techno metal, except with a KISS style firey stage show.

Here's a controversial one: Oingo Boingo is just a more successful Devo.
How? Devo is far more well known than Oingo Boingo. I'll agree that Oingo Boingo came in under the same nerd gimmick that Devo defined but I knew Danny Elfman as the Movie Composer far before I knew a single Oingo Boingo song. Speaking of Devo goddamn the Boomers lived under a totally different world, you can't make a song that jokes about the retarded.

Do did Oingo Boingo.
