Honestly, that was really the only aspect that I strongly disliked. I liked how in the universe lore, most humans have no magical powers, and so compensate with training and tech. Makes them seem more resiliant against a force of magic wielding monsters and shit. It also made the humans WITH powers seem more important. Since death doesn't matter in MK, 'd say when Kano comes back he has his full on cyber eye and heart. Maybe introduce the Cyber Lin Kui or something.
It makes it less goofy but it makes it worse because goofy is part of Mortal Kombat's charm, it's cool that it's a world of both science fiction and the supernatural.

I know it's not 100% lore accurate but no video game movie is.
And they don't need to be, what really bothers me is when a movie goes out of it's way to change things for no real reason other than for the sake of change, like the Silent Hill movie and all the nonsense about changing it to a West Virginia coal mining town with a constant fire burning underneath and whatnot.

Or when it's a change that simply makes something less interesting, like removing the science fiction aspect from Mortal Kombat.

They didn't even go with the thotty design, that gave Nitara her limited fanbase.

It really does feel like a kids movie. Though when I saw it there already were quite a few kids in the theater...
Mortal Kombat is about different-coloured ninjas punching each other's heads off. It's always been ultraviolent kids' entertainment.

Imagine you're a 12 year old boy, then imagine what you would want to see in a kung fu movie. That's Mortal Kombat. If someone doesn't understand why gratuitous violence and lighthearted plots might go together, then it isn't made for them.

The closest that the franchise has come to "grimdark" is the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film, and to a lesser extent the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series.

Although for me everything up to and including MK9 was comical OTT violence. The last 2 games are more realistic, and feel a lot more mean spirited with the violence.

Saw it a few hours ago.

There is something really off about the entire film, it looks too clean, too sterile. Image-wise it is visually desolate and has no atmosphere, even the trailer dump exterior looks more like a set than a real location.

Not a bad film, but not a good one either. Netflix level amateur cash grab with an interesting cast and some story threads worth pursuing.

Kabal looked ridiculous.

some hammer dude and winged chick from games no one played
I don't know about the hammer guy but Deadly Alliance was very popular back in the day, it's certainly not a game "no one played" it's the game that basically saved the franchise from irrelevance.

I wish she had that outfit too, but it's still cool to have the character at all.

As others have pointed out, Mortal Kombat has always been essentially a kid's franchise.

And that's ok, violence in a fantasy context like Mortal Kombat, where it's always been over the top and like I said, happening in a fantasy context is inherently harmless for kids.

There's a world of difference between what could be called "fantasy violence" and violence in media that is actually meant to be portrayed realistically, go watch the movie Killing Them Softly and specifically the scene where Ray Liotta is beaten for an example of movie violence that is done totally realistically and it's absolutely horrifying, there's a world of difference between that and something like Mortal Kombat or older movies like Robocop, Total Recall, Predator or Terminator 2 for other examples of violent movies that were popular with kids.

Sometimes it really just depends entirely on context.

Another thing to remember is that kids are simply incredibly curious about the world we live in and violence is simply a part of the world we live in like it or not, so it's natural and even to some degree healthy for kids to explore their curiosity about violence in a proper context.

It's related to why kids also like scary stuff, again, it's exploring an emotion, in this case fear, and curiosity about that emotion and it's healthy for kids to learn how to cope with and understand fear in a fantasy context, it's healthy for kids to explore a wide array of emotions through media or storytelling, same deal with something like Bambi's mom getting shot, in that case helping kids understand emotions like grief and concepts like loss.

We insult kids' intelligence by thinking all of their media should be wholly sanitized stuff with no more emotional content than simple pleasantness, because life simply isn't always pleasant and it's good for people to learn how to deal with that early.

The hammer guy was Reiko, introduced in MK4 and didn't appear again as a playable character until Armageddon.

And yeah, despite many of the new characters introduced in that era being looked down upon, Mortal Kombat did really well on the 6th generation consoles.

Exactly. And while MK: Rebirth was sort of cool, an official movie based on MK:Rebirth is not something kids who've been exposed to the games would want to see, it's not something kids who've never played the games would want to see, and it's not something nostalgia fans would want to see, either. A tonally serious MK might satisfy adults who've never really cared about Mortal Kombat, but they're unlikely to watch this film anyway, and it'll come at the cost of suckingl the fun out of it for everybody else.

Worse, MK is really fucking violent, and the extreme violence is all part of the fun; a tonally serious MK - with the same level of violence, only the violence is totes serious now, because, like, it's for adults and stuff - would feel... wrong. It'd be like the difference between watching a cheesy 80s action film, and watching videos of children die on Liveleak. When the lizardman pukes acid all over the big tiddy ninja, you want to come away with a smile. You don't want to come away like you just saw a Mexican cartel murder. You could maybe get around a srs MK becoming overly uncomfortable by toning down the violence - instead of showing her slowly melting and screaming until her brains pop out, maybe there's just a few quick cuts of the big tiddy ninja writhing on the ground before you go to the next fight - but then you've lost the thing that made it fun in the first place.

If you're going to reboot Star Wars, don't make the Prequel Trilogy, make The Mandalorian.

REIKO IS KAHN

I never really cared for Nitara, but she's definitely distinct, and while she wouldn't be my personal pick for a Forgotten Character Reboot, I guess it's cool they included her.

I'm all for a MK movie being violent. If you're going to match the video game, I feel like it has to be super violent.

My biggest issue was that they kept hyping up this tournament, the thing that is supposed to be the framework of the game and the story, and it never happens. It was like they just said "Fuck it, and then they all fight". Well, that and inventing the Cole character (whose power was literal plot armor, lol).

My assessment is the same: You take the energy, sets, story, and most of the cast of the 95 film and give it the violence and visuals of this movie, and you'd have a perfect Mortal Kombat film.

This is why I roll my eyes at MKXs story mode (and maybe 11? I don't remember that one s story).

You got this hokey "it's a story about family!" bullshit only for Johnny to rip his daughters head off in gameplay.

One of the screenwriters said that he has plans for a trilogy: pre-tournament (this movie), the tournament itself, and post-tournament.

I get not wanting the new movie to just be a remake of the 1995 movie with blood and gore, but they really should have started with the tournament because it was presumptuous to assume that they'll be getting sequels.

Yeah, 11 had plenty of family drama as well.

Sonya dies early on then the Cages are confronted with the past version of Sonya showing up during the time travel shenanigans caused by Kronika.

Wait wait wait. Are you talking about Nitara?
Yes, Nitara is in this movie.
