So I was thinking. When it comes to weebs from around the world there's always two men that come to mind when they think anime style film:

Hayao Miyazaki and the late Satoshi Kon.

Which is better and why? It's a tough call. There are numerous Ghibli films of course but everybody has at least one favorite film from them.

But I would argue that Satoshi Kon did it better. His characters are more nuanced, more full of life. None of them are typical heroine type roles either. His films are total mind benders.

Think of it as Miyazaki's lineup to be solid all-rounders. All acceptable and unique in their own ways.

Satoshi Kon is more on the ambitious and mind-bending style, in that he does more concepts than plots.

Both are way better than what we have at the moment.

Just looking at movies, Satoshi Kon only made 4 movies, all of which are good.

Miyazaki has done 11, I like 9 of them. So got to go for Miyazaki, he just got to make more movies, so has more stuff worth watching. Plus Castle in the Sky is my favorite weeb movie.

Just to put a point in Kon's side, without repeating what @WULULULULU said, I appreciate his films more. I'm a big fan of both but Miyazaki's films just don't grab me the same way. Miyazaki has a great legacy with some supremely solid work but I look forward to seeing more works influenced by Kon to be honest. Zaki is a clear winner but I can't find myself voting for him. This is a hard one for me.

Obvious third answer of Go Nagai.

But going with the original two, Miyazaki made beautiful films but I don't remember any of them being thought provoking or deep, at best they had the rare "both sides" argument (though that's ignoring the cases there was a third side which was shown as evil, like the Shogun in Princess Monokoke). I can't really think of anything inspired by him that's not a reference or just animation wank, especially considering he took inspiration from Disney.

Satoshi Kon had far uglier, but more realistic (and thus relatable) films and I'm pretty sure his work inspired other works with the more psychological aspect, so that gets him the win.

This is kind of a tough choice, I'd go with Miyazaki but Kon was a master as well.

My favorite Kon work is actually Paranoia Agent, being a TV series it may not have as flashy animation as his movies, but in telling a longer story it felt deeper and more interesting.

Tokyo Godfathers is interesting for showing aspects of Japanese society you almost never see in other animes.

Miyazaki is stronger in terms of visuals, but Satoshi Kon was better conceptually.

Both are great, and being a minor aviation nerd, I'm especially a fan of Porco Rosso and Wind Rises. But even though Miyazaki's movies all have amazing art and animation, their narratives are pretty conventional. Unlike Kon's, who was really good at that kind of Phillip. K. Dick, "mind-bending" stories, where you can never tell what's reality, and what's psychosis (Perfect Blue. And all Kon's work, to a lesser extent), or fantasy/unreliable narration (Millinnium Actress) or "the simulation" (Paprika, and Paranoia Agent), or fiction (Millenium Actress, and bits of Perfect Blue), or whatever.

Both are top tier, but personally, I prefer Kon to Miyazaki.

If only The Dream Machine was finished, then we could do a proper "Miyazaki vs Kon" since Miyazaki clearly makes family films while Kon made adult films. The only adult film Miyazaki made was The Wind Rises (Porco Rosso might count, but I dunno) but it never got to the same intensity of Kon's level.
