Culture Minnesotans Have Some Really Good Flag Redesign Ideas - The ideas should speak for themselves

Minnesota’s legislature recently asked the State Emblems Redesign Commission to come up with a new design to replace its old flag and seal, which depicts a Native American riding away while a white settler plows a field. So, they opened it up to the people, who could submit their own designs.

The new designs "must accurately and respectfully reflect Minnesota's shared history, resources, and diverse cultural communities," according to the state’s House of Representatives, but "symbols, emblems, or likenesses that represent only a single community or person, regardless of whether real or stylized” are not allowed.

"Public input is vital to the work of the commission and will be sought out both now – at the start of our process—and later—as we narrow down the submissions to five which will receive final consideration,” Democratic Secretary of State Steve Simon, a voting member of the commission, said in a statement. “I look forward to seeing the creativity and passion of Minnesotans shine.”

Several states have redesigned their flags recently, including Utah and Mississippi, which now have new flags, and Illinois and Michigan, which are exploring their own new flag bills.

But Minnesota should be careful what it wishes for, because it just might get another “I Voted” meme out of this — last year, the sticker handed out at polls in Ulster County, New York featured a redesign contest submission by a 14-year-old with a pack of crayons and a vision of a demented spider creature.

People submitted thousands of designs, and more than 2,000 of them are now available to peruse online. A lot of them went the loon route—the common loon is Minnesota’s state bird—but a few stand out as especially unhinged. Here are the ones I’m rooting for, personally:

This breaks every rule of good vexillography and yet, I need it to win.

Does anyone know what’s going on with the laser eyed loons? Minnesotans sound off in the comments.

Simple. Powerful. A weird color. A+

Close the polls. I’ve seen enough. This is the winner.

You can check out all of the submissions yourself on the redesign commission’s website.

Some meme is probably going to win, but the people running the show are gonna say "fuck it" and choose something exceptionally boring.

That's basically what happened with that one satellite - I think it was Serenity? Colbert and a bunch of other retards were trying to get their name/website on it, but NASA said "haha, no" and went with something normal.

A flag idea to reflect the old Minnesota and new Minnesota.

A green and white Nordic cross design to reflect the European Scandinavian settlers of the state as well as the motifs in the old proposed flag people liked and a cyan background with a white star to represent the New Minnesotans.
I like where you're going with this, but the symbolism is far to Christian for Minnesota.

I'm just glad they didn't go with the godawful "Great River Flag," a hideously generic flag designed by some faggot who lives in Boston, not even Mississippi:
Holy shit, that's gayer than I expected even from a Bostonian.

Don't forget the Brits who took one look at Boaty McBoatface winning and told everyone to piss off. Or the guys at PepsiCo for rejecting the people's choice of name for their new Mountain Dew flavor: "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong". Pussies and faggots, the lot of them.

I like all three redesigns. I’m a fucking sucker for the US Shield, but it’s far too generic to be an actual flag.
While it wouldn't be the worst thing for something related to the US as a whole, my biggest issue with it was that there was nothing about it that said "Mississippi," which should be the number one concern for a state flag. The fag had a whole website explaining the supposed symbolism, but it seems to be gone now and I'm not sure what the link was so I can't find an archive. The other big issue I had with it was that it looked too modern, I got a real Corporate Memphis vibe from it.

Plus, as mentioned, it was designed by someone who doesn't even live anywhere near the state, so fuck him and I'm glad his flag lost. I still wish we'd gotten the Gondor flag, but the one we have is a fine replacement.

But really, while the article is pointing out some insane submissions, this clearly won't be a "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong" situation. It sounds like they're doing the same thing that Mississippi did with their flag referendum. They'll start off by accepting literally any submission, then they'll go through and sift out all the obvious shitposts and low-quality garbage (which sadly means probably no laser-eye loons). They'll narrow it down to a few that satisfy their criteria, open it to the public for voting, and probably do a couple rounds of that before they have the final design that they'll then submit as a ballot measure for final approval.

Old fashioned /pol/ and /b/ would have a field day with this.
The retards at the sharty have some of their energy, though not sure if they really target name that dew tier optimistic geriatric projects that open their doors to any and all internet submissions. Would be funny as hell to see, however.

The guidelines the vexillography nerds all care about generally revolve around the idea of the flag being something you might need to recognize quickly in a hectic battlefield or the like. Now I'm going to be bold and suggest the flag of Minnesota will never have any battlefield relevance, or be relevant in any other situation in which the sperging of vexillography rules is actually justified by the reasons those rules exist.

In the modern world, the flag is going to primarily serve the roles of being trivially identified by virtue of being located on a flagpole in the state of Minnesota next to a slightly taller flagpole with the American flag on it, being a flag in the background of some press conference, or being viewed in high resolution or at close range on purpose. Since the first two roles are fulfilled by literally any option, I'm in favor of the flag being beautiful and/or informational when used in the final purpose. Design the flag with the specific mindset that you only care about people viewing it in classrooms or on the internet.

From just the first page of submissions, I like the following. Well, not the white bars on the side, cut those off, make it a square flag, the unique shape will help with spotting it easily on the battlefield. The rest of it shows the beauty of nature and Minnesota's envy over not possessing the world's largest "M".

It's like the Netscape Navigator logo had sex with a box of fancy organic granola bars from 2004.

Do you know where we are?
No one can get offended because it's a stupid birb.

iirc it was a flag requirement for "In God We Trust" to be on the flag.

Just to spite them I should submit a flag that keeps the blue background, but with a severed head of an Indian chief in the center with a bloody dagger or cavalry sword just below it. See what they make of that!

As the process should be imo. I’m envious of the new flag, and wish my state would consider changing ours. They won’t cause it’s pretty decent, but it could be way better.

Vexillology is the gayest shit. I fucking despise the new Utah flag because it’s far too vexillologically clean. Should just get rid of the mountains and divot, and make it a simple tri color with the hexagon seal in the center. There’s too much unique shit going on with it, that it crowds out the interesting part. It’s like the old rule of comedy; if there’s something funny in the foreground, there shouldn’t be anything funny in the background.

You joke, but have you seen the abominations some US cities had for a long while?
Ver archivo adjunto 5498160
Aw, dang, I didn't realize they changed their trainwreck of a flag. Good for them and all but it's the only reason I knew the word "Pocatello". Much like I know the names "Bozo" and "Clarabell".
